well.. haven't been in here for a while  someone mentioned ocuk and i realised I should probably log in to check my account hasn't been hacked, only to forget what email is registered and have a mini panic that it had been :o also took me a while to realise where the jingle bell noise was coming from

Welcome back!

Hope all is good. Also seems weird that people in your real life mention Ocuk!

Day out in ln tourist London today.

Im so over this place. The overcrowding.
Just walls of foreigners on holiday. (Me?)

Honestly it's hellish, I'm too old for this ****.

I was the same last time I was back in Manchester. Just an awful experience walking around.

Something which is winding me up a bit - there is a dual-carriageway between two towns on my commute to work - it has always been a bit notorious as the road layout was done in a different era and not entirely well suited to modern traffic, with problems with accidents and problems with excessive speed but these are actually two separate issues with a lot less overlap than a certain segment of the population [want to] think - in fact there is hardly any overlap at all. Unfortunately a certain amount of these people are in positions of power, some of them seemingly motivated by personal experiences rather than data, and pushing for average speed cameras to be installed at ludicrous cost with the money desperately needed elsewhere.

There have been 6 fatalities and 60+ serious injuries on the road in the last 10 years - but contrary to what some think the vast majority of those did not involve excessive speed with the most prominent factor being people not driving with due care and attention - poor standards of driving are by far the biggest problem on that road. As such average speed cameras will not tackle that problem and at best are a maybe for preventing some small number of accidents in the future.

4 of the fatalities, and 2 of the recent seriously injured, are due to people carelessly driving around a what is now closed crossroads on the dual-carriageway, 3 of which involved speeds under the speed limit and one where the official details have never been released but it has been alleged that the person who caused the incident was both speeding and driving under the influence.

Of the incidents which involved excessive speed the larger number involved people either already disqualified or driving while under the influence so again average speed cameras are unlikely to make any fundamental difference.

The only area they might make a difference is that a subset of the serious incidents are single vehicle where basically a youngish person has got a bit carried away and driven along the road at insane speeds and lost control - the last one I'm aware of was a lad who'd only passed their test a few days before and left the road at 140MPH. But it would be a crazy way to try and address that.

In response to one of the fatal accidents the road speed limit was reduced from 70 to 60 MPH which I don't entirely agree with but I will also say it has significantly reduced the number of people driving at excessive speed and generally calmed things down a bit though unfortunately hasn't made much impact on the average standard of driving on the road which is still poor and still causing accidents albeit due to the limit change with a materially higher chance now of those accidents being less severe.

Something which also annoys me is that more recently it has come to light that the survey certain officials used to claim that there is still a speed problem on the road uses data from before the speed limit change to 60 to claim that 50% of drivers are still exceeding the new speed limit...

Staying with a friend who has a wall mounted bath toy in their shower, one aimed at roughly 3 year old children. I can never resist playing with that thing.

(And apologies for the mental image of me in the shower for anyone I've just put off their cornflakes. Although I suppose since anyone can be anyone on the internet you could just substitute my diasppointing middle aged reality for whatever floats your boat)

Just ordered pizza from Caprinos.
Their website says "Use 100 loyalty points for £5 off?".
I'm like "Good idea, let's do it".
Price updates from £18 to £13, great, placed the order.
Confirmation email and invoice is like "no idea what discount ur talking about mate it's £18 happy new year".
:(

Fraud.. the website price (or discount) is a contracted offering..

Decided to splurge on Business Parking at Heathrow over regular Long Stay for an extra £1.40....probably not worth the difference in saving in time but I want to see if the bus is more frequent at least.

Anyone else somehow collected a ludicrous amount of server rack mount screws (M6 cage nuts, washers, etc.)? every single rack accessory seems to come with spares - I've probably got 200-300 now.

I've collected an enormous amount of scars on my hands from cage nuts before I got a good old cage nut tool.

Yep have a box at work. You can guarantee that you never find a matching set of 4 though, they are all slightly different!

Before 2025 ends may I wish you a bountiful 2026.

Best post in here before it closes for 2025, and someone creates one for 2026!
We are now closer to Christmas 2050 that 2000. (I think, my maths might be a bit lacking) :D

Counting 2000 we have had 26 christmasses with 25 to go including christmas 2050.

I can hear fireworks.

And my WD HDD died today after only sixteen years service.
