This Instant And Moment - 2026!

Are you using a steamer to get the wallpaper off?
No we don't have one :( Been peeling the top layer and then using vinegar water to scrape the rest off/my mum was soaking the paper with hot water and i followed behind. I also scored it with a blade. Some places are easy to peel because the previous owners glossed the walls and ceilings so my dad papered everything

..

So sorry to hear that @Quartz :(

Sorry to hear that @Quartz

The end of 2025 and start of 2026 has been a write off for me, I'm currently tucked up in bed with some sort of flu, maybe superflu or COVID, had the same sort of thing Christmas eve until boxing day and now its knocked me for six last night and so far all of today, woke up in the middle of the night last night with uncontrollable shakes and today I've had a mixture of things, chest pains being one of them which come and go

There's a flu bug doing the rounds. Everyone's masking up at the local doctors' surgery. If you're not living or staying with someone then I suggest you ask someone to check in on you regularly.

One of my ants got rejected by the colony on new years day :O

it seems normal to me just super weak(new ant waking up for the first time), I saved it from the trash pile twice yesterday...
then put her in isolation overnight in a nice moist mini nest so she wasnt sat in dry seed husks all night :/

she seems a little stronger in the morning and seemed able to try to hide from the lights I was illuminating her with.

I dumped her back in the brood chamber, hopefully she isn't in the trash again...

This is her eye if this img host works

That's such an incredible picture of the eye!

Yea their eyes are only around 0.15mm to 0.5mm diameter.
Her total length is probably only about 4-6mm
for her size it was probably only about 0.35mm shes not the biggest worker I have.

it wasn't even a close up pick really the whole ant was visible, my camera must have just focused at the right depth of field to have her eye detailed.

Whole setup with ruler for scale. (the wires a heat cable)

My lens is too zoomed to get a decent shot, macro 90mm lens :/ too lazy to switch it out. both photos are from like 2 metres away lol...

but there's somewhere between 200-400 or so ants, Impossible to count them or even guestimate really.

Super easy to take care of just need a mix of seeds like Chia, golden flax, Amaranth, poppy, Blue grass, canary, millet seeds and the odd oat kernel or sunflower heart.
a tiny bit of protein like 4mm cube twice a week, if i find a house spider I will drop it in boiling water for 10 seconds to sterilise and let them have it..

other than that they just need a water feeder in the outworld and the nest hydrated every 2 weeks or so.

super simple, they boring and don;t really do anything but grow the colony size.

eventually they do start to grow flying ants the males and females that go to mate and make new colonies, but in captivity they don't get the signal to fly off so they just act like really large workers until the colony decides they aren't worth taking care of.

I've never seen an ant holiday farm like yours so it really does fascinate me to see how they're growing and what journey's they are all on. :)
