This is giving me a headache!

Hey!
I've got a bit of a strange issue with my PC, its a few years old, but has been a good rugged workhorse!


X97 - Maximus Vii Ranger

I7-4790

gtx1080

16gb Corsair vengeance

EVGA 650w Supernova



For the last few months, it randomly won't post, sometimes, I've got to press the power button a couple of times to power it on, and when it does power on fans spin, and I tend to get 00 or 04 or even 63 post code displayed on the LCD on the motherboard.

Hard power off by holding the power button down and turning it back on tends to get it going again, sometimes I have to do this 5 or 6 times before it springs into action. Once it boots, it runs fine, CPU runs at around 25c at idle and about 45c at load. I can comfortably game without any issues which kinda makes me think it's not PSU as would've thought gaming would cause power draw and drop the system. Ive tried disabling xmp but doesn't seem to make any difference.



any ideas are most deffo welcome! I know it's old but I'm not quite ready to upgrade it yet!

That's a good shout, the original psu died on me and evga rma'd it in 2017 so it's about 6.5 years old. But worth a try! At least when I get around to replacing the rig, chances are the psu will be fine for it!
 
I'll get a bios battery tomorrow, its beginning to sound more and more like motherboard... The last few days when it eventually turns back on, I get a overclocking failed. Message on posting screen. Although XMP is disabled and I have a non k varient of the 4790. It had also started showing device failed for the ethernet adapter when windows boots and I've gotta reboot. (which works every time). Thanks for the advice, I'll start with the bios battery and probably will order a psu if that doesn't work as it'll need to be replaced for the new build anyway.
 
I have just found a battery in one of my drawers that is the same as the cmos, I'm about to swap it and hopefully it'll solve it! I shall keep you guys updated!
 
So far so good. It still needed a reboot after turning it back on for the ethernet to work. Just tested the old cmos battery and it only comes in at 1.7v so I'm feeling hopeful!
 
To be honest, it's something I can live with! Although this whole experience has made me come to terms with needing to start thinking about that new build! Guess it's time to start watching tech YouTube again!
