I currennt have a Linksys router connected to the net, but between my main PC's I want faster transfer of files as I am currently limited to 100mbit (10mb/sec)

If I were to wire it up like the picture below, I take it the transfter over the network between PCs 2 & 3 will be a lot after as it will be give via the Gigabit switch only and I will get something like 400bit (40mb/sec) speeds

Of course any files transfered to PC 1 will be limited to 100mbit

Um... Yup. Providing Pc 2 and 3 have gigabit NIC's then you'll transfer a lot quicker between them. However, based on that diagram, why not hang pc1 off the gigabit switch aswell? You'll get fast transfers between all the PC's and only a limitation on bandwidth to the Internet.

Assuming PC2 and PC3 have Gigabit network adapters, and your network cables are cat5e or better, it'll work as you describe.
