Firstly let me apologise for asking what must have been asked many times before. Second, It's all new(ish) to me. My understanding of sim offers and pricings may be a little wanting. I've always used a works mobile previous to this.

I used my works mobile for the occasional personal phone call and text as well as work stuff. The firm I work for is absolutely fine with that... and still are. Personal use is minimal anyway. I also use it to download audio books from my synology nas. Possibly 5 or 6 audiobooks a week. Sometimes 10. So presumably a bit heavy on the data useage. Now the firm I work for I.T. dept have blocked access to my nas. File sharing concerns is what the automated message I get says. Ok, no worries. I understand they have to do this.
I am certain they are blocking it for the file transfer aspect rather than the actual data useage.

So now I'm going to join the real world, buy my own phone for personal use and pay for my own data use. I'm scared ;)

I don't want to pay a fixed monthly sum of umpteen unbelievable pounds a month. I'd like to get a sim only deal along the lines of... I pay almost diddly squat monthly and if I don't use my allowance it rolls over and I accumulate rollover adfinitum..

Or I pay a fixed sum and get forever to use that data allowance, phone calls and texts.

I thought I saw a thread recently on overclockers which mentioned something along those lines.

Can anyone advise, please?

Look at Lebara Sims. Rolling monthly contracts you can change or leave, good deals, owned by Vodafone.

Talkmobile do a number of different 30 day and 12 month SIM only deals, they're an MVNO using the Vodafone network. I've had a couple of SIMs with them and had no issues, had to contact their webchat a few times and always been happy with the resolution. I'd happily use them again.

30 day deals are very handy in making sure a provider has suitable coverage for your use before you decide to sign up for a 12 month contract. Plenty of 20GB data deals around for under £10 a month.

Thank you for the replies.

I did me some googling and found "ID Mobile pay monthly sim." 1 month contract 30Gb data, unlimited texts and minutes (Does minutes mean calls?) for £8 a month.

Does that look like a good deal?

I've not bought a phone yet but probably go for a second hand Unlocked Motorola G9 or G10. These tend to be available for under a hundred quid.
Would this sim and this phone work together?

Sorry for the noob questions but, well, I am a noob :).

I pay £10 for Smarty 60gb no contract and you can also data roam abroad with it.
My wife has gone on Smarty £5 for 4gb.
The ID Mobile sounds good value and yes Unlimited means Calls & Texts.

Smarty and ID Mobile both use the Three network.

Yes the Sims will work in those phones.

I had a Smarty SIM before I went to Talkmobile, very very cheap for the data bundle but it was almost useless in terms of coverage, for me anyway. I stay away from home quite a lot due to work and because my work phone is on O2, I have my personal phone on another network to make sure I have an alternative choice for decent data and access to the Internet if the O2 coverage is poor. I had the Smarty SIM for 2 months and just couldn't get on with it, and I don't exactly work rural.

Shame as if it had worked it would have been excellent VFM. So, the point I made about getting a 30 day SIM first to test it out is crucial, unless you know the coverage is decent already.

Can't you just download them on your PC/laptop/tablet at home?
Yes. I sometimes do but I like the novelty of having a server at home and downloading stuff as and when I want to. Besides, It's high time I got my own personal phone. I've been relying on using work supplied phones for many years.

Ought to mention to responders here, I ended up ordering a Motorola G31 A grade from CEX for £105 and an ID Mobile sim. £8 for 30Gb.
I think I did ok?
