Seen this and looks like a nice example of a LSE Range Rover :

Anyone see any probs with that?

But for 2K what alternatives might you suggest? Looking for something comfy, big, suitable for a family of 4.

not really a fan of saloons, so estates..

Alternative I have considered have been maybe a Saab 95 FPT. Waiting a bit longer for P38 year 2000 prices to drop. Or a Disco 2 (V8)

If you only have a £2k purchase price do you have the money to run one of those? The P38 has hugely complex air suspension for example - lots can and does go wrong with them and a £2k one isn't going to be a mint example. It could easily cost another £2k over the next year.

Yes. On the P38 that's a valid point, been watching prices for a while now and it looks like closer to 4K for a decent example of a later Disco/P38, hence the option of just waiting until the post 2000 come down from around the 6K plus mark they are at.. For the RR classics, 2-2.5K is getting to top dollar for them. P38 has reputedly lots of niggling faults mostly electric. The general advice seems to be look at later classics than a 'bargain' P38.

Running costs shouldn't be too much of a concern. I don't do moon miles either. If it needs a grand here or there then that's unfortunate, but not a big problem really. It's the nature of the beast. Howver I'm pretty handy with mechanics and stuff so could probably do most routine work myself. Parts aren't too expensive and are in plentiful supply.

Then I suppose you could do worse, it wouldn't be where my £2K would go, perhaps an older Mercedes W124 E class estate ? ...or if you would consider a saloon, an X300 Jaguar XJ6 4.0 perhaps.

Yeah, i'd probably go Omega too.

Just fear a £2k Range Rover could end up being a money pit. A mate of mine ran a V8 disco and it still cost him a handful despite doing most of the labour himself.

I had an LSE in blue when it was 1 year old, it was nightmare of unreliability then, i dread to think what they are like now.

Give that a miss.

That advert worries me. The LSE should have air in all 4 corners not just the rear!

Chances are the following could be wrong with that Range Rover;

Sills
Rear arches/Seat belt anchors
Boot floor
A Pillars (top and bottom)
Inner wings (front)
Rear "hockey post" / Body Xmember
Front body mounts
Fuel pipes
ABS sensors drifting out on front
Air suspension issues (requiring an ECU reset a lot of times)
Borg Warner TX box viscous coupling issues and, at 144K, possible loose chain issues.
If the Gbox has not been treated well then 144k could highlight issues with this too.
The engine, if treated poorly, could need a rebuild by this point.

That's not to mention all the other "less major" issues like body corrosion, faulty memory seats, faulty heated seats etc that are common to this year.

Having said that, Craddocks are a fairly reputable company so it might be worth a look. It has no LPG either though.

My money would be going towards a second gen Discovery, I would avoid the P38 unless I had a spare couple of grand and a good workshop/knowledge.

Still, you might be lucky and have none of these issues :)

Scorpio/Omega?

Even Mondeo?

TBH, I don't think I could be happy with any of them. I almost bought a 2.5 V6 auto Omega last year, i wish I had, but it had gone. Ended up with a vectra sri instead.. They are just regular cars.

Well noticed, I didn't see that ... I would desire air around, and would definately not consider air->spring conversions...

indeed. It's about 250 miles away, so not as though I could pop out and view it. (although I'd always view before buying)

Do you have to have a 4x4, or is that just something you "want"?

Well, just getting really tired of the vectra and it's hard sus and creaky build. Always wanted a range rover/disco. Maybe consider a Shogun, but these seem to be not a good as an equivelent land rover.

The idea of wafting around in something really comfortable is the aim...

I'm thinking I'll just keep waiting a little longer for the exactly right vehicle to appear. LPG would be very desirable on these (with underslung).

Must be a V8. No diesels, if in a 4x4.
