This should probably go in the 'joke' section

I was in 'purple shirt' world and saw an Nvidia 8400 card with a bundled game 'Rainbow Six Vegas'. Trying not to laugh I called to a member of staff and asked him about the card, "Sir it'll pay the game with all the whistles and bells on, very powerful the 8400 is!".

Ah well, if you want the real deal, buy from Overclockers. These idiots at ** World irritate the hell out of me, wouldn't mind but i only stopped off for a pack of DVDRW!

LOL, that buggy console port was bit touchy on my last rig with as 7900GTX,

I completed it as new with no patches, I think they sorted some issues later, but no way a 8400 will max it at a decent res.

I was in there the other day to buy a MX Revolution for £55 (:D)

I noticed the MS Laser 1000dpi wireless mouse too (not the bluetooth model) which I know is good but obv I want Logitech ;) - anyway I asked the nearest MONSTER (heh get it?!) and he asked what I would be using either mouse for and I said mainly gaming and photoshop etc. He said for gaming the Logitech would be better generally (which is true) and it would be a more accurate mouse.

I guess some of them are well informed, the others barf out whatever the management feed them :p

I also saw the same GFX card bundled with this game :p

Its the same with all retail stores. You always get some total idiots.

Im unfortunatly employed in a Purple Goon Brigade store (part-time, aside uni).. (Awaits the insults hehe) not for long tho want to leave :P (), Some of my collegues are incredible a lot of the time with tech info and recommendations. Equally the majority of customers give you some good laughs aswell tho. I think to be honest it depends on who serves you and their experience.

I remember we sold a Rad X1300 with 512mb onboard ram, the amount of moronic customers buying them just to come back a few days kicking off at the poor performance was just a joke. They can provide some decent laughs.

One you more experienced chaps on here could more than likely fill the role of at least 2-3 staff members at a store tho haha. Its almost embarressing... Then again, last time I remember going to OcUK the staff who served me knew next to nothing, just luck of the draw.

Oh well...
(Agree with Craig321 btw) a lot of the time they stand a poor chance, especially if caught by the store idiot.

I applied for a job there once, got into the pre-interview meetup with a group of others but I never returned and worked PT for the store next door!

If I did work there however and I did spot someone buying a cheapass card like that I'd ask them what they intend to run on it and recommend something better - I find customers are more than happy to listen to your recommendations if you explain the situation and point them towards a solution!

I dunno why but I'd love a part time job whilst I'm at college doing something like that, recommending products and advising people what to get etc.

Much like people asking for specs and advice on the General Hardware forum.

Its a nice place for a part time job. Unless some moron has misrepped a customer on a sale and you have to deal with the flak afterwards. (Nightmare). Its a good feeling being able to help people and for them to walk away knowing what they are exactly buying. (Graphics cards are a key example).

I heavily try and give customers an insight to what kind of item they are buying and how they can stack up against other models. It all depends obviously on the needs of the customers utimately but I would never recommend crap to someone, full stop.
And I do recommend other retailers etc too. OcUK for instance.

The one item I can never understand is why we charge such a stupid price for a USB cable.... Total lunacy.

I also saw a C2D 6600 for £352~ the other day when I went to get the mouse :D

Haha, Sounds about right.....

I can beat that ;).

I had noticed that we were selling an X800se for £149.99 the other week! An SE model!. It wasnt recently bought instock but was still about in warehouse. The scary thing is within 2 hrs of being put out to sell it was gone.

I was like  ,

On the other hand tho, I bought a iMac G5 a year or so ago from my work for £183 pound. I even have the receipt somewhere as proof.
(That wasnt incuding my staff discount at all). If a customer had wanted that same machine they would have had it at same price. Must have been a pricing error but it was a very nice one for me.
This was 'JUST' as a new line was brought in. I sold the same machine on ***'bay for £370+ few weeks ago.

They arent £352 now actually. a lot less.
Infact, I think comparing to OcUK you would almost be impressed.

It is true tho tbh, If you are after any 'Performance' equipment OcUK are definately the guys to go for.
(I think id better stop now incase I get myself into trouble with OcUK mods hehe ;) )

Hi....my names justin.....i work at purple shirted hell.....and I have a problem :p

Nice to see I can come out of hiding now lol

But I know what you all mean, I know more about computers than ALL of my managers and some of my colleagues don't know much at all either (except chris lol).

I had a cringe moment when a colleague the other day was talking to a customer about printers and asked "what are you going to use it for?" *facepalm*.

Hehe, Glad to see im not the only one about here.... I think a lot of people in our job tend to have or atleast develop problems haha.

Brilliant about the printers, very typical :P

I was in Currys once messing around on the PC they had there while my parents was looking at hoovers and someone came up to me saying about they had this brand new PC going for cheap and that it was considered a top notch gaming PC.

The PC was a Athlon 64 3000+ with 1GB Ram and a 6600LE, it was like £600. (This was only like 1 and a half years ago!)

I slapped him in the face trod over him and walked out the shop.

To be fair though that's a valid question.
If someone wants to print quality photos (on photo paper) then they would be advised to consider different options than someone who literally just wants basic B&W printing of essays, letters, CVs etc.

Where businesses (medium/high volume) are concerned it is even more important due to the cost considerations.
