This should speed up game downloads..

Its like every incrimental upgrade to cpu speed, ram capacity, hd capacity. It's all great until something needs more :p

Agreed, it's like a dog chasing it's tail. I used to be upgrading bits all the time but can't be bothered (or afford to) now.
Still, at least this is free. And it's not often Virgin do free, even if it's only to keep up with the others.

Wonder if they'll let me watch Youtube videos at peak times once this is in place...
At the moment the Three network on my phone is more useful in the evenings. :(

Yeah I've had major problems in cities so far. Just outside cities seams to be the sweet spot for broadband. High city speeds with lower contention.

They could increase it to 1000Gbp/s for all I care, until there's a change to their traffic management policy the theoretical maximum is a moot point as far as I'm concerned.

I got exactly the same problem. When I was living at my mums last year I had constant 10meg no matter what time I was downloading unless I hit their silly traffic management.
Now I have moved into my own place, only 5 mins away from my mums and between about 8pm till 1am I can just about browse never mind download anything.
I’m still in the process of sorting it out with them, might upgrade to the next package and see how that goes.

Given the contention problems in my area I'm more concerned about it slowing everything down tbh. My 100mbit has been far from great the past few months...

Just like they have done in the past, they will alter the traffic management policy to reflect the speeds they provide.

Most people, even heavy downloaders, dont find the current policy to be a problem as they download outside of peak hours.

C'mon... it's not rocket science.

Oh and FYI

There isn't any traffic shaping on the 100mbs package, I can max it out easily on Steam.

Bring on my extra 20mbs. :p

I'm on 100mbit and although I dont have any traffic shaping I did get a snotty letter through saying not to download several hundred gb a day during peak hours. So I keep my big downloads to 9pm to 9am now.

i think its all wrong tbh, why should i be told when to download. i can understand it would slow there network but then dont roll it out if your network cant handle it. sometimes i think a lot of isps over subscribe there users....

ill stick with BE* and not have any trafiic shaping download how much when i want a dedicated and speed across all time zones.

Having moved from Be @ about 20mbit to VM at 100mbit I'll happily say that I'm counting down the days to when I can move back.

Ideally to something faster than 20mbit though.

This made me laugh - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16491614

In response to Virgin Media's plans, BT said: "It is no surprise to see that Virgin are following our lead by doubling speeds.

"We announced we would do this for our fibre products last autumn and so they are trying to catch up with us."

BT's fastest available speed to the majority of its customers is currently 40Mbps.

Catch up. Really?

Gotta love free upgrades :D

I've never paid for more than the normal cable line and over the years i've gone from:

128K -> 192K -> 256K -> 512K -> 1MB -> 2MB -> 3MB -> 10MB and now 20MB :D

\o/

Wow... im on 50mb so this will be a really nice leap... I hope they hurry up and do this ASAP in edinburgh. Still not got my 5mb upload though.... if the 100mb down brings a nice 10mb up too that would be SCHWEET

This is good news for me as I am on the 20Mb package and have an old motorola modem. I was going to pay a one off payment of £30 to virgin for a new modem which would give me 30Mb. But if they are gonna send them out for free then I will wait for my 60MB upgrade for free.
