i had a cheap ratchet on facebook market place, i was contacted asking if i would post, all started of norMAl, then i asked if he wanted to pay via paypal and he said hell pay via BT. didnt one bit seem concerned over been scammed. inaway he paid and then started conversation. asking me what my job is and have a i lived in st helens all my life, were was i born... then i copy and paste his details back making sure they are correct, for him to then assume i noticed his facebook name didnt match the details i was sent money from in my bank account. he then replied " oh seeing as you are clever and worked out thats not my real name, you can use my real name as i dont like using real names on face book ".

i gave him no details what so ever apart from my bank sort code and acc number.

I'd be concerned too. I'd ring the bank myself and go from there.

On 2nd thoughts, i'd block him and report to FB now. And phone bank tomorrow.

Shopping refund, places of residence, yeah right.

Sending the item with a return address will give them that info, if they even live there. Primary school info. And if as a friend on FB, whatever info you've placed on there too.

just logged back into my bank account, it was his second name that changed, also i noticed this

Reference:
SHOPPING REFUND

rang the bank, he cant do anything what so ever theyve said as i have 2fa enabled and he would need a lot more info to be able to do anything else, but the guy on the phone said it sounds dodgy as hell but nothing that can affect my banking info. maybe he was fisihing for info to open accounts in my name? thankfully my email , phone number and DOB was hidden / freinds only so he couldnt see any of that. now all been removed

Perhaps he was trying to chat you up :p

Does seem a bit suspicious but unless you gave away answers to security questions while he was chatting then it should be ok.

the reference is the only thing fishy but maybe he's a bit eccentric and thought it was a good joke.

you said its a cheap ratchet so if he does a charge back maybe one of the mods would be kind enough to change your name to "ratchet man" or some such

My forum name is not my real name. Happens all the time.

If said item is a few hundred then maybe a scam. If just £3 then forget about it

his first name was correct, it was his second name he changed.

well infact if you was after peoples details then you would go for cheap items, that way its only cost him a few ££. ive never bought anything and within minutes asked which hospital they was born, what is my occupation and were am i living now and have i lived there all my life lol

charge back wouldnt be the end of the world, draper sent me a cheap ratchet in place of a draper expert, i was willing to write the ratchet of so worst i see ive lost is the postage cost. im going to be honest, i like that name ratchet man lol, more than happy to be changed to that, haha. best thing for now is i contacted my bank so at least its logged/recorded or what ever it is they do.

I don't use my real name on the internet either. For **** like Facebook I use a variation of my first name and a made up second name, but keep the initials the same.

Sounds like he was fishing for details.

You know the standard security questions are always what town were you born in... ,what's your occupation.

The best way i learned to deal with these is to put in something completely random but something you can remember. Like who was your childhood best friend - and remember to put in your favourite pizza topping.

Are you going to pocket the money, block.him and resell?
I just can't see the legitimacy in it anywhere.
nope, im going to post it but dont put a return address on. if it was an expensive item id just tell him i want to refund him, but with it been cheap im happy to post without any return address and take the small risk of there been a problem and the item cant make it back to me.

the other thing what i didnt mention was he wanted to buy a 1/2 ratchet to put a screw driver bit in, that confused me.... also by the time hes paid for delivery he could have got it from amazon for just a few quid more.

the thing is, he had already had my account number and sort code before asking these random questions. hes already paid me now and the bank confirmed that there is no way of him been able to do anything bank wise, i just need to wait for my letter telling me thank you signing up to buy the latest iphone now haha. facebook only had my DOB but that was set to freinds only, ive delete it now altogether. wosrt case is he gets the transaction reversed, and for the amount i wouldnt even try and fight it even tho i ave proof of postage.
