Ok, this is being posted over at SA and is worthy of a read (either here or there). I've blanked out certain words and links with the hope that this can be viewed and discussed here. It is absolutely shocking and needs to be out there.

code:

reddit [http://www.reddit.com/] is a social website that allows its users to share links to content on the internet and post comments about the links. This enables not only the sharing of content (photographs, videos, websites, and so on) but also the discussion of said content.

reddit is massively popular [http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/2-billion-beyond.html], especially with young people [http://en.reddit.com/r/misc/comments/nevz9/results_of_the_reddit_demographics_survey_in_pie/].

reddit is split into subcommunities known as "subreddits", meaning that while reddit exists as a website, it consists as the sum of its subcommunities that people can subscribe to and participate in by means of sharing and commenting as aforementioned.

Unfortunately, the reddit community as a whole also harbors pedophiles and distributors of child pornography, including a man who goes by the name Tessorro [http://www.reddit.com/user/tessorro] and runs a subreddit called "preteen_girls" [url deleted]]

The main purveyor of child porn on reddit is Violentacrez, who was the former leader of the "jailbait" subreddit, before Anderson Cooper's report [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuMdQRRLoYg&feature=related] got it shut down: [http://www.reddit.com/user/violentacrez]

A list of Jailbait (underage porn) forums which have sprung up to replace it that are currently on reddit:
****jailbait
****bait
*******SchoolUniforms
*****Teens
******jailbait
***newjailbait
****Girls
****bait

(asterisks inserted by magnolia)

/r/jailbait is shut down now, but the traffic statistics [http://i.imgur.com/jvNpg.png] posted by Violentacrez [http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/kzlga/traffic_statistics_for_rjailbait/] from its heydays are interesting. The dip in mid August is when admins temporarily closed the subreddit, and the spike on September 30th is when Anderson Cooper talked about it. The numbers after the temporary shut down are abnormally low, as would be expected. But prior to that, they were getting about 30,000 unique visitors each day.

When r/jailbait was open, it had a message on the sidebar asking young girls to submit pics to their jailbait gone wild subreddit, which still exists, and even wants these 'jailbait' girls to get verified before submitting photos. You're also told to "Be respectful. Don't insult the ones brave enough to submit photos / videos".

The owners of reddit know there is active trading of child porn on their forums, and refuse to do anything about it. Further, Reddit's cofounder simply dismisses the issue and blames the exploited children whose pictures are being traded: [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXZYvrue1BE]

The inaction of reddit's administrators has been a frequent topic, part of that being Violentacrez's shockingly close relationship with them.
Violentacrez's Twitter account [https://twitter.com/#!/violentacrez] seems like a good example of this.
Krispykrackers [http://twitter.com/krispykrackers] (head of advertising and the community helpline at reddit)
Hueypriest https://twitter.com/#!/hueypriest] (reddit's general manager) and
Chromakode [https://twitter.com/#!/chromakode] (developer) all follow violentacrez.
So does Jedberg [https://twitter.com/#!/jedberg] (former administrator),
KeyserSosa [https://twitter.com/#!/KeyserSosa] (former lead developer) and
MikeSchiraldi [https://twitter.com/#!/MikeSchiraldiraldi] (another former developer type).

If you view their past tweets, you'll see that Violentacrez has regularly been in direct, public contact with them.

In 2008, r/jailbait received the most votes in reddit's "Best Community" contest [http://www.reddit.com/r/bestof/comments/7okgl/reddit_awards_best_reddit_of_2008_comment_here_w/], with SuicideWatch taking a distant second, receiving about half as many votes.

Another interesting fact is that Violentacrez has the third highest amount of karma [http://www.karmawhores.net/violentacrez] on all of reddit for submitted links. Reddit can't get enough of the guy.

Are you sick to your stomach yet? The list of child pornography subreddits continues: (all subreddits listed below are not safe for viewing)

"Preteen Girls"
"Male Jailbait"
"Jailbait Junkies"
"Asian Jailbait"
"Young Porn"

Other awful Reddit things:

A Pedophile's Confession (URL removed by magnolia)
A subreddit called "Raping Women" (URL removed by magnolia)
"Beating Women" (URL removed by magnolia)
A subreddit called "Lolicon" (cartoon drawings of naked children)
A subreddit called "Pics of Dead Kids"

tl;dr - reddit is a terrible thing unless you think child porn should be actively endorsed.

e : I've been picked up on my tl;dr and admit it was a terribly sweeping statement. Whilst I don't like Reddit, I don't agree that you have to enjoy child porn to enjoy Reddit and that was a pretty stupid thing for me to say. The other stuff above all that? Oh, that stands.

I am sure I read somewhere that this was a smear campaign by another forum and is all lies?

Then again I probably read it on reddit

It's absolutely not a smear campaign and made national television in the US (I realise this doesn't mean it's not a smear campaign but just to show the gravitas). Many further news agencies picked up on the story and my post links a few of them.

And yes, you probably read the 'smear' bit on Reddit.

I'm happy to say when I've made a mistake and my tl;dr was driven more by emotion than considered thought. I don't like Reddit - and not for the reasons mrk alluded to (which are nonsense, incidentally) - and I hate their stance on this issue but to label the whole site as terrible unless you like child porn was moronic of me. I take it back but won't delete the OP tl;dr just so that the flow is clear.

tl;dr - I got my tl;dr wrong by a wide margin.

You were just being a whiny manchild :p

A whiny manchild about child pornography? You're adorable.

No it's not illegal. Urban dictionary will tell you why. Just let this thread die before anyone else sees it.

Why should it die? You were a huge Reddit apologist in the other comment I made about it last week or so. I don't understand your reticence for these things to be discussed.

Ahh in that case then its just a rant by the op about nothing then?

No worries.

No, no rant here, at least that wasn't the intention. Just flagging up a thing which is happening - and this is changing by the day as Ascendancy pointed out earlier, and as Reddit chop and change their mind - which might be of interest to those who don't post on some of the forums where this is being discussed. No rants from me :)

Because you just fell for hook line and sinker. It's fairly obvious that the media companies hate reddit, they always have because reddit has exposed just how bent they are.

Media companies? This came from guys like you and me (well, maybe not you) who use the internet and thought "Uh, this doesn't seem quite right." and posted their thoughts about it. It quickly gained traction and then, and only then, did the 'media companies' do a thing on it.

Why are you apologising for Reddit? This isn't an attack, I really don't get it.

+1 Respect for being honest

:p

If I'm going to call you a **** I should at least be able to do the same about myself :D

e: in response to SuperBOB : Reddit's team aren't making an issue out of this, at least not without being heavily pushed.

This is what actually happened.
1) Forum that hates reddit started a campaign against it
2) Reddit immediately changed the rules
3) The news companies then started reporting on it even though they changed the rules.

1. The only reason as far as I know that SA even got involved was because of activity already happening on Reddit. This isn't anything to do with your perceived view of your ~ GLORIOUS FORUM ~ being attacked for no reason, it's because people started realising they were posting child porn. CHILD PORN.

2. Reddit only changed their rules after long, drawn out and (unfortunately for them, very publicaly available) conversations with some of the main perpetrators of the child porn due to the backlash of very negative press.

3. Some news companies posted it.

Nope.

What actually happened was

1) Forum that hates reddit started a campaign against it

I'd debate that or at least say that this wasn't the reason for the outcry.

SA is easily the best forum on the Internet and these kind of campaigns they get on demonstrate this. Reddit is currently a very powerful social media website and SA obliterated it and it's owners in less than 24 hours.

Yeah, that's not what this is about and isn't helpful.

Why is this thread only being made today? This is like 2-3 days old, and reddit already took care of it?

It's been months in the making, not 2 or 3 days in the making.

Best alt 4 the intra webs.

Then kill everyone.

It's the only way to stop the bad people doing bad things.

Did you read the OP or the thread? No one is suggesting this, no one. We're discussing the fact the Reddit have, for now at least, removed various subreddits which contained child pornography. I have no idea how you made the leap to the comments you made.

No, they've always removed child pornography.

I'm not getting into a ***-for-tat with you.

Doesn't really change who he was though, I'm assuming he only has videos and pictures he's found and hasn't been giving anyone anything for them, if that was the case it's not like I'd want nothing to do with my friend anymore. I'd just want him to get some help.

'Only has videos and pictures he's found'? What do you mean 'only'?

No, I do not and intentionally trying to muddy the waters as you have done - most of your posts seem to be postulations without any background or subject relation - doesn't further discussion in any way at all.

Read the post again. Go to the SA link and follow the actual links which I removed so it could be discussed here (I think some still work).

Just so we're clear, no one is screaming 'child porn' about pictures of 17 year olds in bikinis or posting their FB pictures when fully dressed. That is not what this is about and to suggest so is terribly misleading.

e : to remind you of the admin/pornographers cosy relationships :

There's a difference. Anway...

Here's an interesting (unverified) story about some Labour politicians wanting to criminalise sex with women under the age of 21 (prostitutes, mind).

http://theantifeminist.com/paying-for-sex-with-20-year-olds-to-be-criminilized-in-the-uk/

I'm not going to attempt to defend the practice of prostitution or porn, because it's impossible to, to be honest. But it shows an increasing willingness by the state to impose stricter "morality" on all of us.

Start your own thread. This is about Reddit and child porn, not whatever the hell that is.
