This Week Only i7 920 CPU Batch "A" or "B"

At 3.4, 3.6, 3.8 and 4.0 (all on 21 x multi) i was getting a tdp reading of 147.3.

So I guess its just a generic TDP as you would think the current draw would increase as the speed increases ? also it looks like the same reading is displayed no matter what the CPU voltage is (so the answer being the TDP is NOT displayed correctly for an over clockers system !). :(

Thanks, I noticed it was a question you asked a while back on this forum about the difference between 21 and 20 multi's TDP. ;)

With IBT 2.4/LinX you should be getting 45-50GFlops.
Just ran IBT v2.4, 8 threads max stress, 52 GFlops, only let it run for a few mins though.

The system did seem to get very slow at opening any other program while ibt was running compared to v2.3, also a few degrees warmer

Yep it doesnt seem to go up or down for me whatsoever when overclocked.

hi there

all the 920 D0 ships at the moment clock well and have good memory controllers

i would go OEM at the moment as they are clocking well for me

all i7 920 cpus will do 4.2ghz it depends on your cooling, board and memory

what batch numbers of the OEM are clocking well for you rjkoneill? I bought an oem 920 DO 9th dec which ive yet to get around to testing and its batch was 3939b088.

I found this off another forum for a similar batch number

I own the 3939B078 and I got it stable to 4.1GHz @ 1.192 V Stable w/ idles @ 37's, and Loads @ 52's and under.

Good to hear all the OEMs are clocking well (why do you no longer have the option for a Guaranteed 4.2Ghz CPU like previously ?). are the OEM CPUS of a similar period/batch to your Retail units ?
Many thanks.

Yeah IBT2.3 doesn't seem to be all that stressful for some reason compared to IBT2.4 and LinX, very strange though how performance can almost double between 2.3 and 2.4. That's why I prefer LinX it doesn't seem to be as buggy as IBT.

Anyway glad to see your computers okay. :)

Yeah they had issues with 8 thread tests. That's why people had to run it under 16threads with hyper threading switched on for maximum stress level.
Now they've fixed it with ver 2.4 :)

Hey Setter.. 52Gflops is about right, I get similar with LinX. Do you have Real Temp 3.4 ? There's a program with it called i7 Turbo and it shows if your getting turbo throttling (altho doesn't look like it but may happen after a few more runs).. Unfortunately this happens with the Asus P6T boards when the temps and or power draw gets to high whilst using the x21 multi. My system suffered from the throttle when temps were getting near to 80C so switched to a moded Asus bios (from xtreme systems) which has kept the multi steady at x21 even when temps pass 80C.. May be worth a look mate :)

Thanks stu, ive heard of the throttling issue on the p6t dlx v2, also seen something about using a bios from the p6t dlx v1 board that does away with throttling, is this maybe the modded one you mention? Ill also download real temp 3.4 and check for throttling.

Yeah that's the one Setter. You can cross flash from Deluxe v2 to the modded v1 0006 off the xtremesystems forum and there is definately no throttle going on. Great thread on there about it, how to do it and peoples findings. I've also tried the v2 0001 modded bios but this still throttles.. And that i7 Turbo prog is definately worth checking out.. I was gutted when I noticed it was happening ha-ha !! :)

Does the throttling kick in at a certain temp or voltage then stu, and i take it it only happens when the 21x multi is enabled.

This doesnt look to good, my previous stable IBT ver 2.3 settings are now unstable under ver 2.4 of IBT, also ran the real temp i7 turbo mode, constant 21x multi (apart from a slight dip to 20.096 when the first test ended).

It only happens when we use the x21 multi but at what temperature and volts is unknow. I noticed it when was trying 4.2 at 21x200, volts were (if I remember correctly) at 1.3625 which gave temps at 83c and within 3mins dropped the multi to x20..

Once you get stable again Setter, leaving IBT running for 10 to 15 tests with i7 Turbo running also. It may not happen immediately if your running on lower volts or temps aren't getting high enough to begin with.
So am now at stable at 4.2 with 21x200 with 0006 bios, no throttle with vcore at 1.3625 and max temp hit 86c !! Needless to say but water is the next step for me ;)

Yep, gonna have a crack at geting it sorted, then ill check with the turbo throttling app. Actually considering watercooling myself, but gonna have to put it on hold for a while, could do with a few other parts. Mainly a new graphics card as my gtx 280 has been a bit iffy lately, a new case and modular psu wouldnt go amiss either, just today i had to order a new mouse as my logitech g5 is dying, all in all a bad few weeks.
