This came up in conversation with one of my minions at work this week.
If it's Tuesday and you want to arrange to meet someone for drinks on Saturday, would you invite them for drinks this weekend or would you invite them for drinks next weekend?

To me, next weekend, means the weekend following the one that's coming. This weekend, is the one that's about to arrive.

Apparently, I'm wrong and this weekend is the weekend that just passed, and next weekend is the one that's coming. I didn't ask what last weekend is though.

My head hurts.

This weekend = this weekend
Next weekend = the next weekend

So, if I said to you "Hey Shiv, wanna grab a pizza next weekend?" which weekend are we talking about (assuming I'm asking you on say a Thursday)?

The weekend AFTER the one coming. However, if you ask me on a Saturday or Sunday, that means the weekend after the one you're in

OK, here's a curve ball. I just asked Mrs Rilot and she says that if you ask her on a Monday or Tuesday, then next weekend is the one that's coming. If you ask her on a Thursday or Friday then it's the following weekend. She didn't clarify what a Wednesday means.

I always try to say the coming weekend to try and avoid confusion.

EDIT: Around here (Somerset) it is quite common for next weekend to mean the coming weekend unless it is a Friday then they are more likely referring to the weekend after the coming weekend :s

Why would you be inviting them for drinks 3 days ago?

I think the same as Rilot. But I don't trust other people so I'd be asking for dates.

Same thing as with "move the meeting forward" means earlier to me but later to others.

If it's mid-week Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri and you reference "this weekend", then it would mean this Sat/Sun.

You would only use "next weekend" if you're current in a weekend, so to mean the Sat/Sun 7 days after.

E.g. 1 - it's Tue 3rd Nov. This weekend would mean Sat 7th and Sun 8th.
E.g. 2 - it's Sat 7th Nov. Next weekend would mean Sat 14th and Sun 15th.

This weekend = the next Saturday and Sunday.
Next weekend = the Saturday and Sunday after this weekend (weekend +1).

This Saturday.

It can also be "This coming Saturday"

If Next Satuday means the one immediatly coming up, and today is Tuesday, hence Last Saturday is 3 days ago. Then where would you use "This Saturday" ever?

Do you want the answer in this post or next post?:D

“This weekend” is only to be used once within the weekend period. If someone says “this weekend” on a Tuesday, they should be informed that they are making no sense and should be shamed accordingly. Next weekend refers to the next occurrence of a weekend, whether that is one day or six days away. There is no discussion, I am right and that is that.

The real question is whether or not Friday is the weekend, and depending on your thoughts on that, is there a difference between Friday morning and Friday evening?

This weekend = the end of this week,
Next weekend = the end of next week,
Last weekend = the end of last week.

"This Weekend" implies the oncoming, "Next Weekend" the weekend after. If I was referring to an earlier date I would say last weekend.

The one time in my life I dealt with someone who thought otherwise was many moons ago at a place I worked, she got pulled over the coals for constantly missing appointments and was eventually sacked.

I'm not even joking, to this day I still think she was trying to throw off the meaning to get a pass for not showing up.

We've already had this question in GD in the last 3 or 4 weeks or was that a fever dream?

If it's Tuesday and you want to arrange to meet someone for drinks on Saturday, would you invite them for drinks this weekend or would you invite them for drinks next weekend?

Just LOL if you don't know the answer is this weekend and that 'Next' correctly implies the one after the upcoming weekend if asked during the week, i.e. not on a weekend, although also double LOL if it was already a Saturday and you were asked the same question then that becomes a bit more of a tricky pancake, insofar as the answer changes to 'next' as you are at the beginning throes of this weekend already and the short answer is you must surround yourself with non-idiots who understand basic English and the practicalities of time management.

e: noobs.
