This windows home server?

You still need user accounts on your pc. Each user has permission to there own user area on the server. You can always change permissions using the console though so all users can have access to everything.

Is this solution really any better than a spare machine used as a file store? Currently we have 3 machines and big files get saved where there is room so some spare storage would be handy but I don't see where Home Server would help.

Any ideas on this?

if you've already got a fileserver, WHS won't offer you much, if anything, it just eats more space than say xp pro used as a fileserver

best option is to use a really really lite xp install for the file server

nliteos.com -use that to make it small

The handiest thing about WHS is the Drive extender feature. Its basically software RAID. You set what folders you want it to duplicate and it makes sure that the folder is duplicated onto another drive. Best thing is, as your storage grows, you just clag in another disk and tell it to add it. Doesnt matter about the capacity of it either. You can also access your files from any pc running internet explorer, as long as it is set up correctly. It offers pnp to do this too, so as long as you have a pnp router, it sets all the port forwarding etc. for you.
