Picked up a Sigma 1.4 EX DG HSM today as I was finding that I could have done with a few more bokehs but wanted something sharper at the widest av, not to say the Canon 50mm 1.8 II isn't sharp, it is but for stuff being sold I wanted the best within my budget and the Sigma even rated above the Canon 1.4 online from other folks, up there with the 1.2 L IQ wise but at far less the cost.
Anyway, I read a lot of stories dating back a couple of years about QC issues with the Sigma and AF problems. Thankfully it seems Sigma have sorted this on the current shelf stock, or maybe I was lucky? The focus speed was as fast as the Canon 1.8 and lock on was near enough as accurate as a USM powered lens. As quiet too.
I did a few quick tests and even though I don't normally like doing them and instead preferring real world exampled, I had to be certain my copy had no issues and it certainly doesn't disappoint here.
It's slightly sharper at 1.4 than the 1.8 Canon at 1.8.
At 1.4 there is some CA/Flare but nothing that can't be fixed in processing later.
TEST1:
Sharpness comparison.

TEST2:
Can a Droid head stand on it?

TEST3:
Size comparison.

TEST4:
It's one heavy mother; Can a shifty teenager lift it?

TEST5:
BOKEH!

TEST6:
So robots can headstand on it, teens can't lift it because it's too hefty....like a tank. So can it withstand a grenade blast like one too?

Guys....I'll continue this review when I'm able to afford another 50mm EX DG
