I wanna be one of those dudes. You know the ones, they carry a red and white number plate and chill about randomly near motorways etc.

Does anyone know how I would go about getting this job???

Any information would be much appreciated.

They're trade plates, the red and white plates anyay, usually for when you're selling cars or something like that, stuck on the back front of new cars and cars being transported around without a normal plate.

I wouldn't want to do it, hitchhiking home after driving around in a car. Though the better traders could probably just sort a lift out instead of just waiting around :)

I'm out of work because I've injured my arm and this seems like the kind of job that would prevent me having to go on SSP.

I can drive I just cant do any lifting or anything.

(p.s. I usually drive and valet cars for a car rental company)

They are just delivery drivers. They take cars to dealerships etc., they pick up cars and take other cars to different destinations, all they are doing is waiting for their lift. The red and white plates are dealer plates that hold insurance for whatever vehicle they are on enabling the drivers to be insured wherever and whatever they are driving.

Not exactly the world most exciting job and not very well paid I would imagine.

Its just something I can do untill my arm is better. I thought it seemed a nice way to see a bit more of our country and pay the rent at the same time. Come september I need my arm 100% so that I can start my career as a fireman. (I've got in but training starts september)

they normally arent waiting for a lift
they are hitching
basically they get given money to get back after they've delivered the car
if they hitch, they can keep this money

That's always how I understood it as well. Presumably they keep their trade plates visible so that truckers/other delivery drivers etc know that they're delivery drivers rather than random psychos and are then more likely to stop for them.

It's more likely that they get paid so little that they need this extra money to make it worthwhile.

all i know is learnt from a thread in motors a while ago :p
afaik you'd just apply at a dealership, bigger chain ones probably have more business going, other than that i have no idea

I applied for a job to collect and delivery new tipper lorries for a local bodybuilding company. The guy that interviewed me looked blankly at me when I asked about the money for train fares etc. He assumed that I would pay for it out of the generous £4-50 per hour he was offering. He claimed they were using a vehicles movement company but, were hoping to save money by having their own driver. Obviously they had done their sums
