Those sectioned paintings

My dad just brought home a 3 canvas print of the New York skyline. I'm convinced there should be a decent size gap between each (identical sized) canvas, of maybe 10-20cms whereas he thinks about a centimetre. I think the small gap would just look they'd be hung wrong and that a larger gap is the whole point of the painting being in sections. Thoughts?
 
i think if you are going to leave a gap it should be noticeable, otherwise you might aswell hang them with no gap as one big picture.

I don't think there is a correct way, it's just personal preference, I find some look better with a gap and some are better without.
