Okay, I just received a new kit of RAM today: 2x2GB to replace my 2x1GB. Alas, one of the new RAM modules is broken, so I have to send it back. Before I do so, I'm wondering about setting up the working stick next to the two existing sticks. So I'd have a 2GB stick in one slot and 2 1GB sticks in two others. I know I couldn't possibly hope to get dual channel goodness out of it, but I'd have 4GB capacity instead of 2. Would that give greater performance than 2GB in dual channel?

It would work fine withough the dual channel a 2 x 1 + 2 to give 4GB

Performance would drop a little though depending what you are doing the reduced disk access may offset this.

However, every memory RMA I've had you need to send both Dimms back in the original packaging.

I know, I wasn't actually thinking of trying this. I was just asking if half speed and double capacity would yield greater performance than normal speed and normal capacity.
