Thoughts - 6870, 560Ti ...or just wait?

Hi Guys,

I'm a little torn, so I thought I'd get a bit of 3rd person perspective here.
I'm willing to spend at a push up to £200 right now on a GPU. Looking around the reviews, and what's available within budget, it looks like I'm looking at:

6870 1GB (from about £135)
Geforce 560TI 1GB (from about £165)

Looking at the reviews, the 550 has been discounted as it looks like the 6870 is worth going for over a stock 560, sometimes being cheaper and the minimum framerate is higher, but it's a little weaker than the TI dependant on the game you're playing.

Now normally I'd just be deciding between these two, but a small voice inside the back of my head is saying, wait and see, the 7850/70s will be along sometime soon and might be a much better buy.

The trick is I'm just not sure, I'm rocking a 4850 512MB as an interim card, so I can wait, I'm not stuck on a non-usable card, it's just, do people think it will actually be worth waiting!

Any thoughts appreciated!

It's worth waiting, the 7870's and 7850's are out very soon. The performance will be better and not just that it will push down the cost of the current cards more as they become eol. You might be able to grab a HD 6950 2GB for £150 or less in a few weeks, maybe a GTX 560 ti for £130, price drops will start as soon as the 7 series actually goes on sale, hang in there..

I am in exactly the same boat as you alex!

Firstly waiting to see if I have won that competition for the MSI 560TI 448 card :p (really want this one and would be the one that I would get if I had the money :o).

And if not, I am waiting then for 78xx to come out and see how they perform for price and if the current mid cards come down in price.

I don't think we will see any prices changes for those mid range cards (560TI and 6870) with the 79xx as they are in a completely different price league, will only affect the 580 and 69xx pricing possibly.

However when the 78xx comes out (iirc around Feb?) then we should hopefully see price reductions on them, I hope! :D

I posted recently about buying a card around the £180 mark, sadly the 2Gb versions of the 560ti and the 6950 are JUST out of budget range.
I've decided to wait until March as that is my Birthday and should get some trusty spending money ;) hopefully the new 7xxx series will be out by then and prices will of dropped a little and even offers will begin.

Here's to wishful thinking and keeping your fingers crossed :D

i'm the same off to florida in april and although i'd love a new card my 4870 512 plays battlefield at a quite acceptable framerate. I'd need a really big boost to lay out 150 quid

The 7800 series launch a few weeks after the 7900 series, there will obviously be price cuts to every range of current card, low-mid-high as the new replacements are released. Not long to wait now...

Yes when ALL the cards are out, all the prices of the current gen will be reduced, however the 79xx are the ones that are coming out first and the 7970 is going to be priced at 450+ and the 7950 possibly at 375+ so the 69xx and the 580 will be the only cards to shift (if much at all due to them not being manufactured any more, so no more stock will be coming in).

As I said those cards are in a completely different league for pricing about £130-200 VS £375-500. They will only be reduced once the 78xx comes in at around £200-250 (if that is the price that they do actually come in at)

Unless all the shops want to get rid of the "old gen" as soon as possible (like what OCUK did with the 480s selling them at around £200 about 4 or more months ago) then they may reduce the price a bit.

Guess will have to wait and see how things pan out.
