Was thinking of treating myself to a 4870x2 as an early birthday present and was looking for your tech thoughts...

Current setup
Q9450
4gb RAM
8800GTX 768mb
XP Pro (32 bit)
Mobo is an ASUS P5N-t Deluxe nforce 780i so I know i will not be able to x-fire 2 cards but that isn't a problem i have no intention of adding a 2nd card.

Sage advice?

My bro recently went from a 8800GTX & is really happy he did. Mind you I thought his GTX was heavy, the new card nearly gave me a hernia LoL !! BTW you'll see a bib improvement in games using AA.

If you got the money then go for it the card should last you a good while. Other cards to consider are the 4870 and gtx280 both of them also do a good job at this res. If you want the best then get the 4870x2.

Thanks for the advice. As I am on XP pro 32 bit, and a graphics card with 2gb gfx ram, how much of my 4gb system memory will be addressable (still confused about this topic :))

2gb. If getting an x2 i would upgrade to xp64 or vista 64. From what i have read on 32bit windows they have a max of 4gb usable so if you have 4gb ram then then you take away from that however much your gpu has to get the addressable amount ie you have 4gb the x2 has 2gb so 4-2=2gb addressable memory.

Yup I thought that would be the case. Think I'll just go for it anyway, see how it goes, and if not entirely happy will look at going 64-bit as an option after!

Thanks all

I have the powercolour 4870x2. Love it. Got it running on a 32 bit xp os, with 2gig of memory, runs fine. I guess it would benefit from a 64 bit set up but just hanging on a little longer.

do it do it!

Be very carefull ; what PSU do you have? - This beast takes some serious Amps.. And not all PSU's are equal.. I would say 750w min to be on the safe side!

Just my penny's worth. (You might want to budget in another £100 for a new PSU)

I have a Gigabyte 4870X2 and so far I love it. I upgraded last week from a 8800GTX. Absolutely no problems at all.

I'm running one fine on a Corsair HX620, though yes I wouldn't be happy running it on a 620 watt PSU from lesser rated brand.

diblob, go get one they're great :D

Well I now have my shiny new 4870x2 thankyou OCUK and forum advice :) Installed and running absolutely fine! No worries on the PSU I have an Tagan 1100.

Done no benchmarks yet, but fired up Crysis and cranked up the detail and it runs like a dream. Perfect as I got it on the day the release Catalyst 8.9 drivers came out. Obviously I am still in the process of testing and evaluating, but so far am very happy and it seem to have been the right choice for me. thanks all.
