Hi guys

I currently have quite an old system which dates about 4 years old. It was top spec at the time and the intention was to buy the best so it would last for a long time. Alas it is time again to put together a new system that will last for the next few years.

Can you nice people give me your views on what i have picked out below and if it needs some tweaking let me know.

I won't be using the machine for much gaming with my main focus being on Photoshop, Video Editing and other general powerhouse stuff.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.50GHz 6MB-cache CPU - Retail £199.74
BFG GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £193.86
OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Platinum (2x2GB) Dual Channel DDR3 x 2 (8 GIG TOTAL) £505.22
Asus P5E3 Deluxe Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £155.09
Thermaltake VH6000BWS Armor+ Super Tower Case with Window - Black £146.86
Gigabyte ODIN GT 800W ATX2.2 Quad-SLi Compliant Modular PSU Modular PSU (GE-S800A-D1) £105.74

I already have 2 x 150gig raptors in RAID 0 and 4 x 1TB drives and 2 x dvd/cd writers

why have a 9800GTX when your not going to be doing much gaiming, you might as well get a 8800GT or 8800GTS for about equal performance and less money.

save some money on the PSU by getting a 500-600W unit such as the corsair HX520 ,it will power that PC without a problem.

unless the warranty is important to you, get the OEM q9300 or q6600 and get a tuniq tower cooler instead of the retail chip

drop the ddr3 Motherboard and ram for ddr2 stuff as ddr3 offers no real world difference at the moment. unless you like benchmarking save some money.

this will be what i would get

Hi mate

thanks for taking the trouble to do that.

As i said i just spec'd up a machine i thought to be a bit future proof but that's why i love this forum so much there is always so many knowledgeable people just happy to help and give you their spin on a rig.

i have just realised that i plan to use windows xp but i'm sure it has a limit on how much memory it supports???.....i dread to switch to vista, i have already taken it off a new hp laptop because it is so slow and clunky!

both windows xp and vista 32 bit editions support 4gb of memory including whats on your graphics card and other devices.

you use all that ram, you need a 64 bit operating system.

unless you get a 64 bit OS such as XP64 or vista something 64 bit edition, i suggest you drop 1 of the RAM kits as you wont be able to use it anyways. however dont drop it if you plan to change to a 64 bit OS in the predictable lifetime of your computer
