Thoughts on Guns N' Roses?

In case anyone needs further proof as to why Slash was the musicians favorite while he was in G n' R, and why G n' R simply doesn't sound right without him (or Izzy, he gets forgotten too often), here's a (10 minute...) solo session from Slash from the Live in Manchester CD. The first bit is just a nice blues solo, but in the second half he does his signature Godfather theme tune, it's awesome. Apologies, there's no video (there are recordings on yt, but no one has mixed it in with the good CD audio).

Anyone who knows their blues guitar playing will hopefully appreciate that's a damn fine player at work right there!

I think he's massively overrated as a player, personally, even though I love his sloppy blues style.

I don't think he's over-rated at all, I mean i'm not suggesting he's a Buddy Guy or BB or whatever, but when you consider how well he melts into a full hard rock group (and he's shown at least 3 times he does) I just think he's a really good all-rounder who deserves quite a bit of recognition.

I mean, admittedly that Godfather stuff gets dangerously into shredding territory, which i know some people love, but isn't my thing really, but, especially if you watch the footage that goes with it, it's utterly effortless for him. I just think he's a really impressive guitarist, who, odd as it sounds, is far more humble in his playing most of the time than many other really good players. OK, all of his bands are always a high-pitched front man and him effectively sharing each song, and that's a bit predictable, but he's also willing to just sit back and let someone else have the limelight.

As an example, I saw Walter Trout last year too and that was literally his guitar, him and some other people on stage, yet I would go as far to say that I enjoy listening to that above solo more than anything Trout came up with in a near on 2 hour show.

Loved the Use Your Illusions and Appetite, enjoyed lies, Spaghetti Incident was terrible and put me off GnR.

The new GnR cd is rubbish. Different band using the same name, with Axel as singer.

The end of Guns N' Roses IMO.

I love the early stuff and have a fair few bootleg DVDs of the early shows.

It all started to go downhill with UYI (too much junk added to satisfy Axl's ego - could have been one immense album), I won't count the cover albums and Chinese Democracy doesnt really count as GNR IMO.

The Ritz gig in 1988 is absolutely awesome - well worth a watch if you're a fan and haven't seen it.

Loved em when I was about fifteen, Appetite was a fantastic album and sounds every bit as good as it did when it was released. Liked the Illusion albums at the time but theyve not held my attention over the years the way Appetite has.

Ive seen Axl's GnR at a couple of festivals, both times his voice pretty poor and we were 'treated' to extended pink panther and bond themed solos by the guitarists while Axl took about fifteen breaks/costume changes. Bucket Head was on guitar for one of the shows and that was a pretty weird fit.
Also at that show Axl slipped onto his arse mid high kick, then stormed off for a bit.
At Leeds last year they came on ridiculously late and Axl ranted at the end saying they thought they had another hour, slagging off everyone he could think of. He clearly didnt believe they had anoter hour as theyd played eveything youd expect and finished with Paradise City, was all a bit sad.

If only they could put all the bull **** aside and get a proper line up back together for a tour :(.

Never been a fan myself - it's just a type of music that does nothing for me. I will say when I hear it out on a night out, or on the radio the usual classics do get hummed along too but I would never go out and buy an album of theirs.

I quite enjoyed the Illusion albums.

Along with The Stranglers, one of the first bands that pulled me away from the Stock, Aitken & Waterman bile of the time. And for that, I will be forever grateful.

Appetite for Destruction was an awesome album, later stuff ranged from average to complete drivel.

I saw them live in 1988 and can say that were possibly the worst live band i've ever seen.

And Axle is a complete helmet to be honest :)

Very much one of my favourite albums (Appetite for Destruction).

Like the Use Your Illusions, but feel it could have made 1 whole album if they chopped some of the weaker songs.

Few other tracks on the other albums are worth a listen, and the latest album is 15 years too late, and has lost all the original magic due to the crazy roster changes.

Went to see them live twice. In 2002 and again in 2006 and even then it was downhill.
