My latest build will be using an Intel i7-4930K.
I just wondered if anyone here has used this chip and what experiences they have had with it and successes and failures of overclocking.

You may want to hold off another few months since that platform is about to be updated with the x99 chipset and Haswell E processors around August.

The cpu you have now is no slouch and unless you use heavily threaded applications I doubt you would see any improvement going for a 4930k.

I have that cpu I would wait like has been stated but I must admit mine at 4.5 ghz (can do 4.7ghz) has not let me down whether it be gaming or college/work.

If its just for gaming 4970k will be marginally better, but cost wise it beats the 4930k as once you add mobo and ram x79/x99 sysetms will be expensive (especially since x99 will be DDR4)

Echo those saying wait for Haswell-E. X79 is archaic, and unlike desktop enthusiast Ivy -> Haswell, Ivy-E -> Haswell-E should be a big jump in performance.

4930K is a great chip. Strong IMC. Really fun to Overclock and very good performance too.

Haswell E and X99 will be the next enthusiast socket as many on here know. The platform will take a lot of time to mature as its the first platform supporting DDR4.

X79 is very mature and DDR3 is cheap in price which DDR4 will not be. If I was you I would go for the mature platform and then upgrade once X99 has found its feet and pricing on DDR4 has levelled out.

Jump to the x99 platform now and it'll be full of niggles.

x79 is rock solid and I'm looking forward to moving to an 4xxx chip at Christmas time.

Haswell-E could be a big drop in performance compared to SB-E or IB-E

4 cores on a normal 4770k overclock not so well, the question is how will 8 cores on a Haswell-E overclock ?

I would hardly describe X79 as archaic with it's quad channel memory, 48 PCI-E lanes and 6 core CPUs. If anything I would say the newer Z87 and Z97 systems were lagging behind.:D

Thanks, Sounds like a good idea to me.
Any idea what kind of speeds I should be able to OC to without bother?

Went from x58 920:4.2GHz to x79 4820k:4.6GHz can't fault this chip at all with SLI 670's 4GB.

Very good boost in performance a under rated chip, but don't forget l can upgrade to a 4930K if need be with the need to change the mobo.
