Bros Pc has died, and was looking at the Mini (keeping his screen keyboard etc), tho he really just needs the basic one, has a large external HD etc, and is just somone who needs it for basic day use etc etc.

Just wondered what the general thoughts on them was, as a base PC can be bought for a small price these days.

Can't really beat them for size really. Is he an OSX user, though?

They are built very well, too.

New version is rumored, but that has been said for a long while :( (still waiting).

It's a brilliant way of experiencing OS X without having to shell out for an iMac or Macbook. As long as he's not going to do anything too intensive or play games on it he will be fine.

I'm very tempted to get one as an HTPC if/when they refresh the line.

I got one just recently. It's very nice and small and quiet. Not the most powerful thing around, but unless you're doing really intensive stuff or gaming, who cares? OS X is easy enough to pick up if you're halfway computer literate, and you can slap Windows on it too if you like so you don't lose software compatibility.

See i hear so many rumours about an update, dont know what to think lol.

Yea, my bro has a console, so will never see a game, its basically to sort his iPod (the wife too) and his pics (hes just had a kid, so pics galore).

I told him it would be perfect for weasy home life, tho ive never really had any dealings with one, with that and iLife he should be sweet.

Ill tell him to wait for the update annoucement, are any dates penciled for a show?

As it stands now they are very expensive for what you get. I'd wait but don't expect a fantastic deal - they are designed to push people up towards iMacs.

or just get the lowest spec duo core 1.66 then put a duo core 2 cpu in it takes about 10 minutes to change it you can get s/h 2gb duo core 2 cpu for about £50/55 add more ram or bigger h/d and superdrive its very cheap and easy to do...

great bit of kit can be done quite cheap

Well heres an open ended question, anyone have any ideas just whats to be changed in the new mini then?

I'd wait for the refresh. It's looking more and more likely.

As mentioned, they make great HTPCs. Who needs an Apple TV when the Mac mini does everything an Apple TV can do and so much more (BBC iPlayer, web-browsing, etc)?
