Thoughts on MVA vs IPS (Sort of review)

So I am on VA now after using IPS for 2 years M27Q IPS vs XG270QC MVA.

So yes the MVA panel does have some image retention, black smearing, yes it is way worse than the M27Q using the UFO test.
I played Unreal Tournament 3 vs skilled bots vs (Literally become aim bots) as my tester as it is a very fast paced FPS with a lot of dark shady maps.

The first noticeable thing is that yes the MVA is blurrier in motion but my performance in game was not hindered, the image in front directly where the eyes should be was not as noticeable as the peripheral around the edges, IPS wins on keeping a cleaner image in fast motion in peripheral vision.
However something I did notice hugely is that I could play for way longer on the MVA than I could on the IPS, the IPS makes me want to rest my eyes much faster and no the screens were both adjusted to around 200 nits peak brightness.

This is not a hidden phenomenon apparently.


I have not tried HDR yet, HDR was terrible on the M27Q so anything better here is a win.


I have not used any speed enhancements on the monitor yet like PureXP.

I have not witnessed much any colour difference at all.

HDR works really well on the XG270QC considering it's VA limitations, it get's too bright, in reviews hitting 570 nits is almost HDR 600, yeah it is very bright.
In HDR mode though sharpness is overdone and screen adjustments are locked out in this mode.
The black levels are "Acceptable" in HDR mode.

HDR is far above what the M27Q can do but nowhere close to a proper HDR experience say with a QD-OLED screen.

200 nits is really lot, unless you have brighter room illumination.
And with lower contrast of IPS that makes average image brighter.
So actually you aren't watching same brightness image most of the time.
Unless you're watching only white screen...


And for non-gaming your M27Q is one of the monitors with lame panel upside down BGR subpixel layout.
Wtih basically every renderer expecting standarr RGB subpixels as rule, there can be clarityissues in rendering of fine high graphics/high contrast edges, including text.

That's not how it works, it only effects screen text due to text being optimized for RGB as it is the most commonly used layout. It don't have any effect on game graphics.

Cleartype fixes 99% of it anyway, I had no issues in regards to cleartype all that much.

The MVA panel has deeper blacks, but in all honesty the M27Q contrast is very good too, well above average for IPS hitting almost 1200:1 but it don't come near the 3000:1 of the XD270QC.

When I said 200 nits, I used review calibration settings for both and Lagom.nl for the rest such as gamma tuning.
