Evening folks.

Just considering how I should style myself for stage going forward. I pretty much live in jeans and t-shirts and wondered if I should aim to have something a little more memorable or striking about my appearance on stage.

What would be a decent look or help attract interest do you think? Or stay as I am. I'm a pretty big bloke so I have trouble finding stuff that fits and looks good as it is, I don't want to look like a phallus either!

I don't really want to wear the traditional 'suit' as it sets a precedent I don't want to spend my life wearing a tie!

What do you find interesting, do certain comedian's style choices put you off (Russell Brand/Eddie Izzard are extreme examples I guess)

I appreciate this is a very egocentric thread and may get ignored on the whole - but if you have any thoughts I'd be happy to hear them. :)

Maybe it's just me, but any time I see a comedian come on stage I seem to be just waiting for him to do something to indicate that they're a waste of my time.

I think someone dressed up would probably start off badly. I do want my attention grabbed at the start... but dressing up "comedy" doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

From your own point of view though you should try to feel good. If that means feeling comfortable in jeans and a t shirt, or perhaps it might mean getting yourself a nice shirt.

I didn't really mean like a 'hilarious' costume, but more along the lines of what, if anything, people warm to when they first see a comic. People make judgements before you even get your first word out so it's interesting to see what people think.

I watched the start of both of your YouTube videos and I was impressed. To be completely honest though I stopped watching when you started on Political Correctness, since it's been done too many times before. Up to that though you had managed to not annoy me :) So I wouldn't worry about that.

Isn't that my second joke? :p feel free to watch past that bit, it's not a long joke, or particularly good, just a bit of smart arsery :)

I watched the rest of it. It was far too short to really tell, I like a nice long gig. The only thing I'd say is try, if you can, to be less nervous. You are funny, but the audience takes a lead from you, if you act as if you're not being funny then the audience will respond that way.

I have never seen "How to look good naked", for people that haven't they might not be engaged, you could get around that by saying Who's seen ... and then say Well for anyone who hasn't... lesbian harry potter etc.

Thanks for the feedback :) Just to cover some of your points;
Five minutes on stage is all you get at the level I'm at (brand new!) so whilst you like a long gig, I don't have much choice until I progress further up the 'ranks.' :p As for nerves, you've watched my very first time performing, and the second time, where the audience included my mum and half a dozen friends. Both times I was bricking it  The third video, where the mic falls apart, I was much more confident.

As for the joke you mentioned, most people know who Gok Wan is, and when you have only five minutes on stage, you don't have time to explain things much more than I have. Point taken though - it does tend to get big laughs that one so I think the majority are ok with it :)

Don't wear anything funny.

At all.

Unless you make a big deal out of it, like Izards transvestitism, it just seems like you are looking for cheap laughs.

Jeans and a t-shirt is fine, if you are funny people will laugh, if you are not funny a a silly bow tie is not going to change that.

Again, I quite agree, I wasn't planning on wearing anything wacky, just wondered if people were ok with casually dressed comics, or prefer people in suits etc. It seems not - which is a relief :D
