I have an ageing PC and want to start getting back into gaming, I have a Corsair 720w power unti, a 512 Samsung Pro SSD but the rest needs updating.

Thoughts?

I would ditch Samsung 960 M2 and get a better cooler something like Noctua D14 if you dont want water cooling or a 240mm / 280mm all in one cpu coolers as you already have a Samsung Pro 512gb SSD and i dont think M2 drive will improve a lot for gaming to justify spending £120.00 on it...
As for your graphic card wait a week or 2 until GeForce GTX 1070ti is released, it might push current GTX 1070 prices slightly lower or 1070ti itself might be better buy depending on price, with money saved by removing M2 Drive you might buy 1070ti which will be a lot of improvement for gaming vs 1070 and M2 drive ...

Pretty much what has been said, the gains from ditching your m.2 because you have a ssd already and putting the monies into GPU is probably better.

Don't overpay for the i5-8400 while supply is low either, unless it's an emergency. That's another good reason to wait a couple weeks. Get yourself 3600MHz RAM to squeeze the most out of it.

£10 i can handle, would the stock cooler be sufficient?

Yup. Just won't look nice with a windowed case and will be loud when CPU is stressed. But that's your call.

I can then put that money into the GPU? Or is that cutting cost where I shouldn't be

Are you looking for a way to squeeze in the Aorus 1070, to match the mobo? Or do you mean for 1070Ti when it appears.
