I've seen a used one and the sample photos look very impressive better than many other sample photos I've seen. It's a pretty old camera but would this be worth a punt as it's cheap?

When you say pretty old are you talking about the D70 that was around 15 years ago?

How cheap is cheap?

It's going to be a long long way off the standard of modern DSLRs (I remember replacing mine with a D7000 felt a huge upgrade years ago and even that feels old to me now) - in ideal conditions it'll still produce half decent photos but the resolution is low, detail capture won't be brilliant and forget low light, it'll be outdone by most modern phones in that sort of scenario.

I gave my D70 to my dad 5 years ago as he wanted a backup for his D600. It has never been out since then. Only 6Mp sensor in it so way off modern bodies. I am thinking perhaps you are meaning D700, or D7000?

I bought it new in 2003/2004 so as @Kenai said, it is 16+ years old.

I had a D90 years ago & it was a robust DX sensor camera. Plus the Nikon lens fit for perhaps a future upgrade.
My concern about the D70 is it's only 6MP which is even less than 4k, so if it comes with a lens then thats likely it's actual value?
Saying that, most social media uploads are sub 4k.
I'm still using a 6yr old D610 which is quite capable.

It's a very old camera now, if you're into a type of photography where low light performance or autofocus makes a big difference then I'd look for something a bit more modern. Even if you're budget is buttons something a bit less ancient will still still be a noticeable step up.

If not then go for it it, as long as you're not paying over the odds it won't lose any value, just make sure you allow for the lens, since that's probably worth more then the camera.

I bought a DSLR D70s back when they were new with the kit lense 18-70. For various reasons we never really used it that much. Tried it again last summer to see was it useful.

Always liked the colours and quality of the photos. Fast shutter, great for moving subjects. I thought it a bit soft from what I remembered. Useless inside with the built in flash. It's not powerful enough, doesn't throw the light far enough in room. While I rarely use video, you do miss it when you don't have it. You do get much better depth of field and bokeh with it.

Obviously with all the manual controls it's useful tool for learning. I don't find the pictures different enough over my mediocre smartphone in normal use.

I was thinking of decluttering and get rid of it this year. I was talked out of it. I'm torn between replacing it with a decent compact or just a better mobile phone.
