Thoughts on Silver Arrow?

I just ordered one from this website. I use an overclocked AMD 1100T BE at 3.8GHz (up from 3.3) with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Rev.2 cooler and its just not doing the business. Checking core Temp after a game, says my temps while in game were running at 69 degrees c.

(I hear that's not so good. Luckily I haven't had any problems with BSOD or whatever I just decided to get a better cooler.)

So I was thinking about getting the Corsair H80 First, Then it was the Thermaltake Frio, Then it was the Noctua D14

Anyway I saw the reviews regarding the sound on the H80, (too loud, i wanted something quiet.) - The reviews on the D14 (too ugly and too big for me.)

And finally the Thermaltake Frio (Seemed too cheapy and similar to my old cooler).

So I finally decided on the Silver Arrow because i like the way it looks and it benched slightly better than the D14. which is good! (But I didn't realise it was A BIG as the D14!) I was going for future proof performance when i ordered the cooler, that was the plan anyway.

So I am also wondering, How is the Silver Arrow IRL? and it does come with the 2x 140mm Fans included right? Link here: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-078-TR

And will it fit inside a Fractal Designs R3 case? Apparently the D14 will, I read somewhere so I am hoping this will as well...

Thanks all!

^ Arrrghh. ><

I am not sure about leaving the side off my case all the time, wont more dust get into it!? Then there would be no point of having the installed dust filters, and also I smoke near my PC and if it was being left open....

This is not good.

Ok I have an idea, have you considered turning the fans sideways so the flat surface is against the ram and the side of the case? It's the extra curve from the shape of the fan in the way you have set it out which is impeding you, right?

I just checked and there seems nothing stopping you doing that and it should be able to fit into the case fine after that. When that's done the Fans will be flush with the top of the heatsink and you should be able to close the case.

Nice, thanks guys, also if you do manage to swap the fans around make more pics in this thread and let me know. :) i think the R3 is pretty industry standard as far as dimensions go, and the other poster mentioned the heatsink by itself fitted (IFX-14), so you shouldn't have any problems? i measured mine, i have only like 2mm clearance lol

Still hope it fits, it should fit. Barely... Barely.

Man that looks pretty awesome. Would the ram get sufficient cooling though? Wedged down under the fan might not get any airflow at all

ram doesnt need super cooling really, with that said, the push pull of the fan would drag cold air from the memory directly into the fan which is sitting on top of it anyway.
if you have decent intake from the front, the flow of the case would cool it additionally.

guys did you read my post about him having the fans the wrong way ? that's why he cant get the side on his case. he should turn them sideways so the flat edge is flush with the ram and the side of the case...

Yes I can see what you mean now, although it looks like the fans might interfere with the graphics card the other way round, also the fins look like they poke out of the case a bit as well, so with a Fractal full tower case I might be ok, but its a waste of money paying for a "quiet" case and leaving the side off, I might have to go for a smaller cooler

yeah i love the quietness of my r3, case, and i have 6 fans inside, 7 with the cpu fan, lol.

when i get my sa ill install it and make pics then you can see if it really does fit ok :) im gonna be getting it tomorrow ^^

i found this post by a dude on another forum regarding this:

"All arrived and installed...

For future reference for everyone, the Silver Arrow fits in fine in an R3, and even has enough space above the heatsink to install a 14cm exhaust fan in the top of the case.

The only thing I'm not sure is if you could get a side fan on the case, although I'm not using one so its no issue to me . I think it would be ok with a 12cm fan, but a 14cm one may clash with the heatsink... Not sure!

I have low profile XMS3 RAM, and it doesn't cause any issues. I suspect, if you used high profile RAM with heatsinks, you could fit them under the Silver Arrow fan, but this would push the fan up and then it wouldn't fit in an R3. If you have a wider case you could probably have both and it wouldn't likely be a problem.

Thanks for the help! Fractal design never did reply to my e-mail, but never mind "

there is another guy who purchased the IFX-14 and put it in a r3 and thats basically just the heatsink without the fans, he said it fitted.

and i was thinking the same about that picture but its hard to judge clearence from that picture,

so far the IFX-14 owner and the other forum guy i posted here said it fits, so im willing toi bet it does, youll see tomorrow anyway when i post my pics ^^

im prety sure its the angle. 1 sec

looks flush to me

or maybe a couple mm's taller

thermalright_silver_arrow_fans_side.jpg

but bear in mind the dude who made the pics fans are way above the top of the sink as shown below, because the fan is on its side, it should be like these above. ^

there should be a few mm's clearance in the r3 case. like i said earlier it should fit, barely.

You can use taller stuff as mentioned in the post above but it usually limits you to 2 of the 4 slots. However as 8GB (2x4GB) kits are getting cheaper this is less of problem for most. Again as mentioned it depends completely on the motherboard in question, some layouts do vary.

yea true, all my 4 slots are occupied however

the clips were a freaking nightmare to get on after the sink was installed, i really recommend that you place those on the sink before you lay it down to install.

Very nice, what are the noise levels like?

extremely quiet, even though i now have 8 fans in my pc. i can certainly attribute that to the fans i have inside, the arctic cooling f12

have 4 of those, and 2 fractal silent ones in the front, and the 2 thermalright fans.

plus the r3 has sound dampening material in it :)
