I see dell and now acer at ocuk are stocking the new LED 24inch panels, but does anyone know how these compare too the TN panels ?

Or more importantly if these are LED panels surely there better and sharper/detailed over the PVA/IPS panels out there going for £400-500 ?

Any thoughts on this...

It's not the panel, it's how it's backlit. The LED screens are still probably TN panels unless you go for a higher spec one. As such they won't match an IPS panel for colour reproduction.

However, they will increase the range of colour produced quite a bit.

I went ahead and got the Acer so will let you know if it's any good when it gets here :D

ye along with better dynamic contrast and they produce slightly better colours.
they tend to suck up less power and make the whole monitor lighter too.
I'm hoping LED backlit panels will be more reliable too, and I've seen quite a few CCFL backlit screens suffer from inverter and bulb issues... I guess time will tell.

LED backlighting should give better blacks, I imagine...
Not unless the monitor has local dimming, which very few of them do as it's expensive to implement. Otherwise black levels are down to how well the panel blocks light, so TN+LED isn't necessarily going to be any better than TN+CCFL unless the actual panel is superior.

LED backlights mean a monitor can be thinner, use less power and doesn't need the warm-up time of CCFLs. They're also less likely to make annoying noises at low brightness settings due to the lack of an inverter. But they don't automatically mean better image quality.
