Was looking into buying a new, beast of a lappy.
Came across MSI's GX620 (soon to be released), and was very interested in the specs for the price.

Anybody got opinions? Any other recommendations?

My thoughts - I want!

Doubt they will come in at that price though, OCUK have the G600 on here for nearly £900, and the new ones look even better.

Thinking of getting one of these, come out at just over £700

Not from the UK though...

That looks like an alright spec, as long as you don't mind the low-res screen.
Since the creation of this thread, I have opted to save for a OCUK Ultima Mobile (Clevo M860TU). This is mainly because of the DDR3 RAM, and 9800M GTS.

However, it is £1200, so the GX620 still looks very ideal for those who want a decent spec for less money.

The res on that one is FAR better. In fact, it's perfect for HD movies.
Still unsure about that Graphics chip though, as I would be buying the laptop to play some of the latest games, and the 8600M GT is fairly weak compared to what OCUK offer.

If you are gaming on a laptop (which I assume will have a 17" display) I would look at the 8800MGTS as a minimum. The 8600mGT is simply not good enough for this screen size (resolution).

I have a *name of competitor* X80R which has a 8800mGTX which apart from crysis is a pretty capable graphics card giving you roughly performance between a 9600GT and a 8800GT.

It has the same basic design as the 8800GT desktop card albeit with only 96 SP's instead of 112 and slower core / memory speeds.

Yeah, I was also looking at the X80R's from *That Competitor*, I still don't like the idea of lugging around a 17" Lappy though.
Maybe I should hit the gym lol.

Isn't the cost a lot higher too though?

I'm after a 17" but I won't be taking it out much just from the office upstairs to the sofa downstairs :) and maybe to a mates house once in a while!

Mine cost around £1100 when I bought it although the price has gone up recently. At the time however it was one of the cheapest laptops with the 8800mGTX.

The 17" screen is fantastic to game on (especially with the 1920x1200 resolution - Oblivion looks stunning!) although it is really a desktop replacement rather than a laptop. It weighs a lot and the battery life in gaming is abysmal (we are talking no more than 30 minutes before it dies from a full charge - 9 cell battery).

I was origionally looking for a GX720, but at the time MSI announced it, it was no where near release. so i settled with a HP DV7 1000, which comes at pretty similar specs to the 720 anyway, i sat through a 2hour lecture yesterday with my laptop on, seems i still had around 54% battery before i left :P

EDIT: I also considered the Dell XPS 1730, for the gaming gfx, but the size of the thing and low battery life put me off :(

Wow, they let you take laptops into Uni lectures nowadays...... Damn I feel old.
