That was the case with the old models, but I believe that all the current UK models (500 LT and 300 'Yourban') have a wide enough track to use on a car licence. I suspect the licence pass date won't be a problem for the OP however :)
 
Just to answer a few questions that have been asked.
I am retired so the trike would just be for fun, rather than driving the car.
I would certainly do some sort of training before taking to the road.
As I have had my license since 1972 the latest 2013 restriction does not apply to me.
I had a Reliant Robin back in the seventies and it was a hoot to drive, till I turned it over and decide to get a car with four wheels then.
 
Seems like a good enough idea, just for the good of everyone don't be one of the 2-3 people I month I see in London who gets theirs wedged while filtering :D

Very wise decision. Sometimes jumping in at the deep end and learning by experience is a good thing, but generally not when it comes to riding a bike on the road.

Might be worth contacting your local training place and explaining what you are after. If it's possible to hire one for a bit of training you'd have a chance to see if it's something you'd really enjoy or not.
