I wonder how many immediately quit their jobs with the most spectacular "f-you" they could think of when finding out?

This.

Get the news on Friday. Email sent to boss, that special bottle you have been saving cracked open, five star luxury cruise booked, triumphant post on social media.

The come Saturday evening oh look, there's another message about my prize...

most Norwegians are already rich anyway

2 trillion sovereign wealth fund and only 5.6mil pop, bet all their social services are well funded.

I’m too paranoid for this. I’d wait until the money was in my bank account. :D

And then there's that one guy who probably stripped off, dived up on his desk, and started doing the helicopter while screaming borderline incoherent expletives until escorted off site by security.

Again, they would also know that given the draw numbers they wouldnt have been jackpot winners surely?

It doesn't appear to be a case of everyone believing they had won the top prize, but of thousands of actual winners receiving an official notification that miscalculated the amount of their prize. Unless you had an intimate knowledge of the lottery calculations, why wouldn't you believe it?

For example:

"One woman, in the middle of a renovation project, told Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) she received a notification that she had won 1.2 million kroner ($119,000: £87,000), but instead received only a fraction of that sum."

Winning £87,000 doesn't sound like scooping the Jackpot. But of course later finding out that your correct prize amount was only (say) £800 would be pretty gutting.
