I am having a real hard time deciding on what RAM to get for my Threadripper build. Going to get the following:

  • Threadripper 1900x - Get this now and then upgrade to a higher core Threadripper 2, when they come out at the end of the year (1900x are under £400 now and save the money from not getting a 1920x or 1950x, and spend it on RAM, but don't want to go over the top either). I do want more threads, but I am thinking it will be better to wait for the TR2. With the 1900x, I will double my thread count.
  • Gigabyte GA-X399 GAMING 7 (Assuming that Threadripper 2 will work with this board)
  • LIQTECH TR4 240 CPU WATER COOLER
  • 64GB RAM
I have been looking at Gigabytes tested Ram list, but I think it is getting a bit out of date and it is hard to find ones on the list still for sale.

The G-Skill ones that are specifically certified for AMD don't seem to be available in the UK.

I could get 4 x 16gb or 8 x 8gb sticks. From what I understand, there is advantages and disadvantages from using single and double sided ram sticks and also 4 or 8 slots. If I was to go for 8 sticks, then 8 single sided sticks would be best.

I think I want to go for 3200 MHz ram and ideally CL14. Don't know how much of a difference CL14 and CL16 would make at 3200 MHz. I also understand that Samsung B-Die memory would be ideal. I am also assuming that the Threadripper benefits from higher speed ram as the bog standard Ryzen. Or, do I just go with 2666MHz ram that is cheaper (~£200)?

Ones that I have been looking at so far:
  • Corsair CMD64GX4M4C3200C16 Dominator Platinum DDR4 64 GB (4 x 16 GB ) 3200 MHz C16
  • Corsair CMD64GX4M8B3200C16 Dominator Platinum DDR4 64 GB (8 x 8 GB ) 3200 MHz C16
  • TRIDENT Z RGB 64GB (4X16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200MHZ QUAD CHANNEL KIT (F4-3200C14Q-64GTZR)
  • Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 64GB (4X16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHZ DUAL/QUAD CHANNEL KIT - BLACK
  • TEAM GROUP XTREEM " EDITION" 32GB (4X8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200MHZ QUAD CHANNEL KIT - BLACK - Heard good things about this but very expensive.
  • VENGEANCE LED 64GB (4X16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHZ QUAD CHANNEL KIT - WHITE LED
What are your thoughts or experience?

Thanks 8 Pack! I thinks I can live with 3066mhz, if it comes down to that.

Did you mean Xtreme and not Dark Pro? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...3200mhz-quad-channel-kit-black-my-094-tg.html

Would the following be able to run at 3200Mhz CL14:

  • TEAM GROUP XTREEM " EDITION" 32GB (4X8GB) DDR4 PC4-32000C18 4000MHZ QUAD CHANNEL KIT - BLACK
  • TEAM GROUP XTREEM " EDITION" 32GB (4X8GB) DDR4 PC4-33000C18 4133MHZ QUAD CHANNEL KIT - BLACK

Strangely, the 4133MHz C18 ram is much cheaper, but on pre-order, and will probably go up in price when it comes into stock. Of course, when the stock comes in, is another question.

That's interesting. I would save around £80 (x4). Of course, I would be taking the risk that it would not work in Quad channel, but don't know how big that risk is.

It does look neat.

I ended up getting 4 x TEAM GROUP DARK PRO " EDITION" 16GB (2X8GB) (DDR4 PC4-28800C16 3600MHZ DUAL CHANNEL KIT - BLACK). I also ended up getting a 1920X instead of the 1900X. I just noticed that the price has just increased by £10 for each dual channel kit (total increase for 4 kits is £40), so I am lucky that I made the purchase when I did.

I got all 8 sticks running at 3200MHz and CL14 (Used the XMP profile). So far no issues.
