Threadripper upgrade foolish?

I've managed to pick up an MSI MEG X399 Creation for £300 and am wondering whether to pull the trigger on a Threadripper build or return the board.

Given that Threadripper 3 will bring PCI-E 4 in all likelihood and move to X499 boards I wonder if waiting is better. Especially as the better priced TR CPUs like the 1920 and 1950 are likely to be out performed by the Zen 2 chips on AM4.

It's only foolish if you overspend on the CPU, or could make use of features in TR3, like PCI-E 4.0 or faster clock speeds and don't intend to upgrade.

If you have no use for 64 PCI-E lanes, or quad channel RAM I'd just send it back or sell it on, and sit tight for Zen2 AM4. :)

Me

I would wait, just too close now to drop that kind of money specially with the 7nm chips. But the board you could potentially keep unless you want a 64 core cpu then maybe a newer X499 would be best.

but it also depends on whether you can wait? if you need the horsepower now then dont wait but if you can then I would.

I'll just return the board, it's cheap but even a high end AM4 board is going to be sub £300.

Any system I put together be it a 1920X (total £600) or a 1950X (£800) or 2950X (£1100) is likely to be outperformed by Zen 2 for less.

I'm not running VMs, just gaming/photo and video editing so single threaded performance still is important.

Thanks all.

I will sell you mine if you want

What do you have currently?

Waiting via probably the clever thing to do. Must be only 4-5 months away now.

5820K which gets the job done tbh. The upgrade itch was kicking in, plus having my hands on the MEG Creation for cheap was making me look for something new.

If I'm honest my main use is Lightroom and gaming which first gen Threadripper isn't going to much faster at than a 5820K.

I'll sit tight for Zen 2 on AM4 or X499/Threadripper 2.
