Watched this for the first time last night and found it totally gripping from the very start. Surprising how low-tech it is by todays standards but yet you don't think of it like that when you're watching it. There's a few scenes in it that I will never forget and it certainly makes you wonder what you yourself would do if such an event actually happened.

If you haven't seen Threads then you have to put it on your list of films to watch, as everyone should see this film at least once, imo.

It is thoroughly depressing in parts so probably not a good idea to watch it if you're feeling a bit low already, a lifter it certainly isn't. :p

I'll never forget this film, properly one of those 'OMG' films which stay with you for a long time, it has made me think seriously about nuclear weapons ever since.

I swear I watched this in School, seem to remember the 4th years and up all brought into the Assembly Hall to watch it, I can even remember some of the 6th Form Girls crying at it but from IMDB it was only released after I'd left School..WTF!?

I don't think I'll ever watch it again, I think I'll stick to recommending it to people that haven't seen it yet.

I don't seem to remember them showing it at my school, or at least I wasn't there on that particular day ;)

Haven't seen or heard of it before, but watching it now after seeing this thread - will give my opinion once I've finished later.

There was another very similar film made in the 60's - cant remember what it was called though.

Threads and When the Wind Blows. They really liked to make you think it was going to happen in the mid 80's. I doubt they would have even bothered giving the 4 minute warning if they did nuke us.

Heres the first part on youtube.

This came up a little while ago. It was quite hard hitting at the time and the threat was more of a reality then.. I recall being quite worried about the whole thing.. Today we worry about our next phone upgrades and the number of face-book friends we have.. which can't be a bad thing. Still, NK could change all that.

I often post about Threads, it had a profound effect on me. I have literally never seen anything as haunting or thought provoking and I watched it in 2001, never mind what it must have been like in '83. I bought it on VHS for 17 quid after hunting down a copy in London and ended up chucking the tape out a few weeks afterwards so I couldn't watch it again. I've ended up with somewhat of a morbid fascination about nuclear war/cold war. Find it horrifying and interesting at the same time. Even ended up joining the CND for a bit :p

The War Game (1965) is a black and white BBC mockumentary and that's fairly haunting too, similar theme and it's just under an hour long. Probably on YouTube.

When The Wind Blows, as mentioned, is fantastic and chilling.

God no, that is dire. Threads is far superior.
Dire and depressing yes but thats what you would expect from a movie portraying nuclear war generally is depressing :( .

Fail safe original and remake + Thirteen Days + Stangelove are among my nuclear favorites.
