Hi, looking to purchase a cheapo laptop for myself. I have rounded it down to three, but not sure which one to go for.

1. COMPAQ C742 (practically new)

* Intel Pentium Dual Core T2310 Processor
* (1.46GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB Cache)
* 1GB Memory
* 80GB Hard Drive
* 15.4" BrightView
* Dual Layer DVD ReWriter Optical Drive
* Wifi Enabled

2. IBM Thinkpad L41 (second hand)

* Intel Pentium 4-M, 1.6GHz
* 40 GB HDD
* 1 GB RAM
* 14.1 inches
* DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo
* USB, WiFi Enabled

3. Samsung R20 (pretty much new)

*1.8 GHz
*Intel Celeron M 440
*80 GB HDD
*1 GB RAM
*14.1 inches
*DVD+/-RW
*WiFi Enabled

I have seen all of these for around the same price. Your input would be appreciated, Cheers.

Mates just got a Celeron laptop, said it's rubbish once you install anti-virus and some multi-tasking. I'd get one with 2GB of RAM.

What's your budget?

i'd got for no.1 personally, best cpu, ram is all the same, prob the best screen, the dl dvd-rw always comes in handy ;) and nothing better then build in wifi :)

i know where you was looking at the COMPAQ C742, if you go there and look at the COMPAQ C757 you get twice the ram but loose the wifi

or even the ADVENT 7203 is worth a look considering its got a faster dual core and wifi, but only 1GB ram.

Acer Aspire 5720Z.
If you're willing to go to £500, there's the Acer Aspire 5920. Core 2 chip and a bigger HD. I think the Acer Aspire 7720 look fab too, two x 120GB HD, and a 17" screen

No such thing. Probably a T41 which has a Centrino 1.6Ghz. The best built laptop this side of a Panny Toughbook and very popular with corporates. Don't pay more than £300 tho.

Compaq will be the quickest and biggest of the bunch. The IBM wins for portability.

Pentium 4-M 1.6s do exist, although I'm not sure if IBM used them for the T41..
