Helping a couple of people build their machines and just wanting an idea of some specs.

Need a base system for the odd game (only low res/settings) and general use. Budget preferably £350-400. This will be the whole machine if possible - but if it doesnt have a monitor, that could be alright if they keep theirs.

The next spec is a gaming machine with a budget of £800 for the whole machine, this will be used in COD4 mostly. This has to include keyboard/mouse and monitor. Overclocking isnt really needed.

Final spec is for £1000, which will also include keyboard/mouse and a monitor - however the budget is preferably around the £900-950 mark, although it can also go over the £1000 if needed and is future proof. A 20" screen should be adequate, this will be used for COD4, Crysis. This needs to include 4GB of RAM and a C2Q if possible.

So recap;

Spec One (£350-400) - Full System, monitor, keyboard and mouse etc all included (Operating System is not essential, but if it fits in budget it would be great). Used for general use and light gaming.

Spec Two (£800) - Full System, monitor, keyboard and mouse etc all included, used for COD4. Operating System is not essential here.

Spec Three (~£950-1000) - Full System, monitor, keyboard and mouse etc all included, used for gaming including COD4 and Crysis. Operating System is not essential here. XP is enough for now

Thanks :)

Remember that if you want to use XP with 4 GiB RAM you'll need the 64-bit version.

In some games at stock the E6750 would be faster due to its higher clockspeed. In other games, especially games on the horizon, the Q6600 would be faster due to its greater abundance of processing cores. In reality they'd both be pretty fast.

Would you say its worht paying extra on top of the E6750 Spec to get the Q6600?

One of the specs is for us, two for a friend - im deciding between whether to get identical to a friend (£800ish one) or spend the extra.

I think if we were to get the Quad, to save a little £ id get the 20" Sammy too - they are highly regarded in the reviews i have seen.

Like mentioned, multi-core is the future. Heavy tasks like video encoding, etc are enjoying it & upcoming games will take full advantage.

Still looking at my options.

If i wasnt to upgrade again, for say 8-12 months, would it be better to pay the extra and get the Q6600 over the E6750?

How does a 8800GT handle COD4/Crysis?

i personally will get a q6600, and for more info on crysis you have to tell us what graphical settign you want to paly at, because 600x480 (or whatever it is) with 0aa and low picture quality it will be great, however 2048x1900 (or whatever the highest res a monitor or the game can support) with full eye candy on, expect a slideshow.
