I'm thinking of getting a Nexus on Threes One Plan with unlimited tethering.

Could I use the phone for online gaming on Xbox Live or would the ping be to high?

And how long does it take to download 1gb on threes network? I tested an Ipad in store on ADSL Speedtest with threes network and it was getting about 2-3Mbps.

I have 3 sim and the average of my most recent Speetest results are :

2658 down, 1314 up and 93 Ping

These have been collected over various locations/signal strengths, and the highs (best) are :

3734 down, 1611 up and 74 Ping

...and the worst (lowest) are :

1610 down, 616 up and 106 Ping

Hope that is somehow useful.......

Ping is just about enough to game with. Ideally should be <50ms.

Read the terms and conditions of your contract carefully if you intend to download via torrent - the majority of providers block them.

i have mates who are on the one plan and use it for every thing as we all live in a very good area, they get any were from 3/5 mbs down and 1 mbs up.
we also get h/h+ which is very good for pings often get 70/90 one mate is on xbox live all the time, another that plays wow, ive also used it on ps3 with out any problems when my home net went down. its a very good plan if u live in the right area, as for the case with a lot of people that dont want the hassle of a phone line then the net on top its a very good option,, hope this helps.

I remember back in the day when a ping of 120ms was amazing!

LOL, I remember getting ISDN back in 1999 and having a ping of 95ms and being over the moon about it. Playing quake 2 and 3 with no drop outs was amazing and also getting called 'ISDN freak' by all the people still on 56k modems.

THose numbers seem about right for Three. I checked and got a ping on 80ms the other evening, down of 2Mbps and up of about half that. However, in theory it should be a lot more on HSDPA. I've been ok playing SC2 on my PC using that and hoping BF3 is also ok.
I'm hoping 4G/HSDPA+ or whatever it is called somes along soon.

Roughly speaking you want ping over throughput here for gaming and the opposite for downloading. In general HSDPA, HSPA+ are both fine for gaming on. Anything less and it's going to be wonky. In terms of how long to download something you just need remember that 8 bits = 1 byte

So 8Mbit/sec bandwidth = 1MByte/sec downloaded.
Adjust to whatever figures you want, slap in about 6% overhead for DSL, 3% for Cable and about 10% for wireless.
