Hi guys,

I accidentaly threw away the cable that links my Gamecube to my TV (you know, the red/white/yellow one?)

So I'm going to pop into town today and get one.

What are they called? A bit of a google would suggest that it's an AV cable, is that right? And is there a specific gamecube style plug, or will any "AV" cable that looks about the right shape fit?

Cheers!

On a side note, I need to buy a game. Sold all my games over a year ago and havent touched it since (hence managing to throw away the cable!). I want a game where I can drive fast and crash stuff, Burnout was awesome!!!(but over too quick). What would you recommend?

The cable you are talking about, is called a "composite cable"

Its actually one of the worst connections you can get... but are given with most consoles.

Try to get an actual RGB Scart cable instead, you will find the picture better!

Yeah its an AV cable and im sure you can also use the AV cables from the SNES and N64 for the gamecube as well.... just incase theyve only got them ones left? :p

It's to go into a monitor, so will have to use composite :)

EDIT: Woah so is it composite or AV?

ha ha ha im sure its AV?
Go to the bay auction site and type in gamecube av cable.... someones selling an N64 one for £3.50 buy it now.... you should see it theres only 20 items!
I think thats the item you mean? :D

They are normally offically called "composite cables"

The cube as far as I know, has:

Composite cables (they are the yellow which is video, white which is left audio, red for right audio)

Svideo dont worry about this one, UK cubes dont use it.

Scart which is probablly the best quaility you can get overall.

I am not sure that you can get component cable.

A/V stands for Audio/Video cables, which is why the cube says "AV out" at the back, but you need a Composite A/V cable to replace the one that you just had.

An RGB scart has far better quaility though, and is well worth the difference in price.

Google cube composite cables to show you images of the cables though, I am 99.9% sure they are the correct ones.

This one!

Is that an AV cable then?

My point is, are they all the same, N64, SNES (do PS2 etc use them)?

If I head off to town today and buy something that looks like that pic, will it fit and work?

Can't use scart.

nah, RF < *.

I didn't think RF was given anymore... I remember being very lucky and getting an RGB Scart with my saturn, where a friend had a R/F connection...

I also remember trying my best to tune in the mega drive for the best possible picture quaility, like it said in the manual ;)

*EDIT*

Cobra.

Yes, that is a composite AV cable.

I hope not lol, I remember going from RF to composite on the N64, it was amazing tbh :p. Tried RF on the ps2 at one point, now that sucked.

He said one of the worst. :p

You will obviously have to get a cable that is designed for Gamecube. The connector on the other end is not a universal standard, it only fits Nintendo consoles.

AAaaaha. Well that's me sorted then, apart from what game to buy.

I loved these games - Mario 64, Burnout on GC, NFSU, Far Cry.

*blinks*

Thats why I said ask for a Cubecube composite cable

Just to round up (for clarity) - AV just stands for Audio/Visual. Any cable that carries an audio/visual signal can be called an AV cable, however the connection on the end (the yellow phono style connector) is what's known as composite (composite because the entire video signal is passed through one connector), as opposed to RGB scart where various aspects of the video signal are sent seperately through different pins. If you have a TV that supports it, go for an RGB scart cable (the connector is like a rectangle with a slant on one side, check the back of your TV) - the clarity and sharpness offered is far superior it almost feels like playing a different console.

And just to add, simply using a SCART connection doesn't guarantee good quality, as SCART connections can also carry composite (it's common to get an adaptor to turn the seperate composite + audio leads in to a SCART block). You must make sure it is a proper RGB SCART lead.

Oh, and if a TV has more than one SCART port, it is common for only one of them to support RGB. :o

It's a bit of a minefield to get set up properly, but worth it if you want the best picture quality on a standard TV.

Also, its well documented that the Official Nintendo RGB Scart lead offers superior image quality. Non official ones suffer from 'meshing' and chicken wire effects. I've seen this with my own eyes this week. Well worth it. Official ones can be picked up for around £10 - £15 second hand.

Couldn't find any anywhere in town.

Will look somewhere else.

And cheers for the advice guys, but as I keep saying I CAN'T USE SCART!!! It's for a PC monitor with a composite input, not a TV!

May have to look on an auction site for one.

There is one on the bay for 3.50 that i saw! (and its not the scart one)

I went online and looked at official places, because I did the same, lost the cable, and they wanted 30 quid for one.

Went down my local second hand games shop and they charged me 3 quid for it.
