Is this even possible? It's ruddy freezing outside and it's thundering. I always thought it has to warm conditions for it to thunder.

Blame global warming. It is now offically the excuse for everything.

Send them south a bit will you? I love a good storm!

PK!

Ofcause its possible , its not just warm/hot temps that cause lightning... Ever heard of thundersnow?

Thundersnow also known as a Winter Thunderstorm or a Thunder Snowstorm is a particularly rare meteorological phenomenon that includes the typical behavior of a thunderstorm, but with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It commonly falls in regions of strong upward motion within the cold sector of extratropical cyclones between autumn and spring when surface temperatures are most likely to be near or below freezing. Variations exist, such as thundersleet, where the precipitation consists of sleet rather than snow.

Expecting it here any minute, i'm in the west side of Nottingham right now.

Its in Beeston at the moment, (and we're on the top floor of our office with the ceiling tiles down due to a aircon issue which is being diagnosed so the rain is _really_ ould against the flat roof ... )

We had thunder and lightning here in Manchester around 9pm a week ago, with continuous rumbling of thunder and constant lightning for around 10 mins. :)

Just come over Mansfield no less then 20mins ago.

Its nothing to do with temperature, its down to pressure.

If we have high and low pressure building up on top of us, we get thunderstorms.

Lucky sod!

Overcast all day here in Walsall; a bit of rain earlier, but no thunder/lighting (typical West Midlands, we always get budget weather). :(

I opened the thread expecting this to be a joke or something. What is special about thunder and lightning in January?

We've had very dark clouds for hours but only light rain, no pressure changes and it doesn't smell like a storm.

all hell has just broken loose here with the weather

knocked my Sky tele out

Same here, tipped it down hard, then hail then that strange sideways rainy/mist stuff, had to wait in my car til it eased off to come back inside. now its just bloody windy.
