Thunderbolt external HDD - OK for VM?

I'm referring to our old mechanical friends as opposed to SSD.
An external 512 SSD Lacie drive is going to set me back over £400 when I can get 1TB for £140.00.

Will it be possible to run VMs off a regular external HDD via Thunderbolt?
 
Of course, if you think Thunderbolt 1 is a 10Gbit link (TB2 is 20Gbit) then you look at SATA3 (which most mechanical or SSDs run on these days) which is a 6Gbit link. There's no bottleneck there, but perhaps a very slight increased latency.
