Hi, I have this OCUK system:
Ultima OC HD 4870 X2" Intel Core 2 Quad Xeon X3350 2.66GHz @ 3.30GHz+ Quad Core DDR2 System
Totally at random I will hear a single tick/click coming from it, loud enough to hear it over the fans which are at a fixed speed. It could be 30 seconds apart, it could be 5 minutes apart.
Heard it while I was browsing so that would exclude the GPU (anyway, I've set the gpu fan to fixed speed via new drivers).

What does that leave.....the HDD on this system already failing....a fan failing...PSU fan changing speeds???

Hard to explain the noise, one single little tick, like a switch being turned on or the noise of an expanding heating pipe at home.

Any ideas?

I'd put money on it being your hard drive. If it's just a quiet tick every once in a while it's probably just the drive head moving or something. I know this might sound a little basic but have you checked its not your CD drive? The only thing you can really do is sit there with the side of the case open trying to work out where it's coming from.

At the end of the day, as long as you have checked it's not a wire getting caught in any of your fans, unless you're suffereing a performance loss I wouldnt worry about it.

PK!

or it could be the psu, my old hyper used to sound like it was ticking when I was using firefox or playing games.

If it's 30 seconds apart I think your HDD is safe.
If it's a single click/tick that is bizzarre. Possible random spells of ticking/clicking I can think of are wires/cables catching in fans, movement of mains lead causing arcing, normally makes a buzz but can be more of a clicking sound. Best thing would be to leave the side off and see if you can pinpoint more specifically where the noise is coming from.
