Hi guys,

Got my cambelt etc.. replaced about 4 months ago and noticed that they hadn't put the cam cover back on properly (no problem, it's only off a bit);

Now lately i've noticed a kinda ticking/tapping noise like something is clipping something (it's hard to explain)... after inspection whilst idling it seems like it's coming from the area of the cambelt + cover that isn't sitting properly. It's not that loud but noticeable.

Any ideas?

I'm probably going to take it to Skoda on Thursday and get them to look at it and as they did it i'm hoping they won't charge much if at all (if it's their fault of course).

Sorry, forgot to mention it's a 1.8t (the VRS).

I can't really hear it with higher revs although if i'm honest I haven't tried raising the revs slightly when idle.

Might give this a go....

Saying that it wasn't making the noise when I got back from the gym just now

Does it only do it when the engines is cold? If so it "could" be somthing like the oil taking a little longer to get round the engine due to the colder weather (I may be just talking crap here..anyone? :-s).

ok, ive been playing with a 20vt lately. you get a lot of ticking from the EVAP canister and associated valve work.

the injectors click a lot too

certain it is not those?

ill post up some pics of a gummy 20vt that ive had to change the sump on... i got some internal shots :D

It's a pretty clicky / tappety engine normally (YEY!) but this is def coming from the cam cover area and not the injectors etc...

I'll do a bit more investigating though before I take it to Skoda though, don't wanna look like a weirdo!

The EVAP canister is well annoying, makes it sound semi-diesel!!!!

Performance is still the same which is all good, not in this weather though. Boooooring! :D

can you not get the cover off and inspect it yourself?

I'm not sure how the cover comes off and talking to a mate who works for audi apparently they're a right pain...

I don't want to end up snapping it off and having to go around with no cover!

It was only done 4 months ago so i'm sure they'll take a look for me.

Is an exhaust manifold blow common on these?

Common problem with Rovers is a blow from the exhaust manifold gasket which can create a loud ticking noise in time with the engine revs.

Are you sure its a new noise? Mine has always been a bit tappety even when warm. EDIT- just saw you said its deffo from the cambelt cover :o

agw, not sure- I haven't seen it on the forums though.

Update:

Well me and a mate were messing about with it today and managed to get the cover back on properly (it wasn't making the noise today)... so fingers crossed it was something silly like rattling the cover.

Hopefully all is well now!
