ticking?

Laptop won't boot - hangs on BIOS screen.

Makes a tick, tick, tick etc noise from boot up.

Guessing this means knackered hard drive?

Got a PC you can hook up the laptop's drive to and scan it with CrystalDisk or something? That would probably be the quickest way to determine if it's the drive.

Make a linux livecd, if you can boot to linux desktop with that then the HDD is goosed.
