Tie fighterq

Only works at 640x480. Don't expect miracles with hardware rendering either. Even the collectors series version is using a 1997 graphics engine. The gameplay, story and third party editors is why people like it.

Slow? I was there when the mod first began, and following it like a hawk. I am an old-skool space-sim fanatic. :D

Porting is the closest we will get though... as with many "remade" classics now it's in the hands of passionate people who have a vision and not enough time to implement it how they would like, there will always be sacrifices to be made. :(

Barring Freespace 2 that is. :D

Can't you just install DOS 6.22 or something and play the original? I guess modern sound chips don't have DOS drivers... Virtual machines?

Wing Commander II, X-Wing and Tie Fighter were some of the best games I ever remember playing.

TIE Fighter is the best space combat sim, bar none, and probably always will be in many respect. It was from a different era of game design, a time when everything LucasArts touched turn to gold, a time when every game released by them could be guaranteed to be an instant classic, and a time we will never likely see again.

Even XWA has its limitations, although at least the 17.6km SSD works :p

I still occasionally play XWA (used to be part of DS back when there was a reasonable online community, NRN etc, before it moved from MS Zone to Errant). Tie Fighter was the game that first got me into PCs, absolutely loved that game, was one of the first games I got, and probably still one I have the fondest memories of, Half Life is but a spec in the eye compared to this, and I learnt a lot about PCs at the time because of it....DAMN YOU EMS MEMORY!!!!
XvT lasted better I think simply because there was a larger userbase because it came out a lot earlier, had initially better support, and was really designed around MP.

Really wish they'd go and do a modern one; I'm pretty sure it'd sell reasonably, even if it was just to enthusiasts; XWA made it to the LA Gold (I think it's gold) series of classic games so it can;t have sold that badly!
