I think they're seeing how many copies they can sell at that price while they still have the physical copies available as a customer alternative (so they don't shoot themselves in the foot by pricing all formats of the game out of the market), if people are happy to pay £57.99 for an online version rather than take a trip to the shops then EA will probably take that into consideration when more and more console games become available online only.
 
downloaded games should always be cheaper than retail, no manufacturing costs (dvd, case & cover/book), no shipping costs and no storage (ie warehouse) costs not to mention no retailer cut!!!

Steams infrastructure will be pretty massive though the hardware and server costs will be large, plus there are bound to be a good few teams of people that look after it. So its not a zero cost platform thats for sure.
