Tiling on asphalt floor

Wouldn't hurt however the right tile adhesive is more important. I would go with a flexible rapid set adhesive. I prefer BAL but there are others on the market.

It's about 1/2 inch thick and dark in colour, house is about 50yo. I was always lead to believe it was internal asphalt

Yep, that's what it'll be. Used over concrete floors to level them and create a waterproof barrier.

Seems to be conflicting advice on whether or not you can tile onto it. I'd ring the manufacturer of the tile adhesive and ask them.

I had this in mine, the terracotta tiles were fitted directly on to it, any damp just evaporated.

If you want to use glazed tiles instead then you'd probably need to seal it
