Current specs:

Asus P5N32 SLI SE deluxe (yup thats right, the one that doesnt clock over 320MHZ FSB)
[email protected]
2gb Geil PC6400 (4x512mb)@832MHZ 4-4-4-12
Enermax 535W SLI ready PSU
Belinea 21'' monitor
2x80GB HD in raid 0 @7200rpm
7600GT@600/1600MHz
Arctic pro 7 cooler
Windows vista home premium 64

I built this system back in december 2006 but made a terrible mistake in buying an expensive motherboard which doesnt clock well at all.

What im planning to do now is to get another motherboard and a new graphics card but i have some requirements. These are as follows:

Motherboard: Shouldnt cost me a fortune (max im willing to spend is about £120) but thats a stretch.
I would prefer SLI and support for Quadcore but only if im spending in excess of £100.

However, the main requirement is overclocking. "I need a motherboard that with my current setup, takes my E6300 in excess of 3Ghz on air (with my Arctic cooler) and be stable".

Graphics card: Ofcourse needs to be Dx10. Mostly i game on my 21 inch monitor (1680x1050) but occasionally i hook it up to my 40 inch Full HD telly. So main concern here is probably RAM on board the VGA, Nvidias 8800 320mb or 640mb or may be Ati's x2900 512mb.

Now, im open to all of your brilliant suggestions so please help me out!

Thanks in advance

Also i have checked that this board has poor cooling on North and particularly south bridge. Would this be a problem with the overclock?

Also, can anyone post their stable clocks for the e6300 on this mobo. I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Hook an 80mm fan blowing air over the NB and you'll be fine. The SB should be fine, maybe get the zalman little blue NB heatsink that fits on to it nicely.

If you really want to push the board then consider a Noctua NB cooler with the 80mm fan blowing over that.

Beware though, there seems to be a bad batch of them out yet. Both of mine so far have been duds as well as half a dozen people I've seen on their official boards over the last 2 or 3 weeks. Maybe I'm just really unlucky though.

The new Gigabyte 650i DS4 board looks nice. Has a good NB cooling solution as well. OCUK don't have it in stock yet but I'm sure they'll have it soon.

Hi Arclite,

Hehe you got the upgrade bug eh. Shame on you for buying an expensive motherboard that overclocks like a pig, we all done something like that in the past so its cool, its a 'learning' experience. I'm sure its a very nice board still and hopefully you can sell it to someone just running a stock system so it can live out its days in peace.

I have been using the ASUS P5B-Deluxe since early this year and its a great motherboard, it was the flagship of the P5B-Series until the Commando came out. Here is a very simple overclock on that board with my 'ok' E6300

E6300 Retail SL9SA L625A796 - 1.35vCore (BIOS) - 1.45vNB - 36°C/55°C Orthos - 36°C/60°C TAT Load

Anyway I can highly recommend this motherboard if you can get it for a good price. There are also lots of good boards from other manufacturers that use the INTEL P965 Chipset, its nearly a year old now so most of the bugs/kinks have been worked out and its on its way to becoming a 'mature' solution.

I just bought another motherboard yesterday actually, had to be as low price as possible but also offer me some good features etc. I was just gonna grab a Vanilla ASUS P5B but then I noticed it didn't have onboard Firewire so I looked at the next board up the tree, the P5B-E, lol after a few more minutes looking at the board I went one step up the tree again and bought the ASUS P5B-E Plus for a reasonable £77 quid delivered.

The nVidia 650i chipset enabled ASUS P5N-E was a very tempting bit of kit as it can be had pretty cheap these days but I was put off by a heap of user feedback, nothing too horrible but it sounded like feedback from people using BETA hardware. Maybe its a driver thing or maybe that chipset needs a hardware revison?

Now the forums are getting a buzz for the INTEL P35 chipset boards and from what I am seeing they do indeed look nice, although being new they are a bit pricey.

I may well cancel my order for the P5B-E Plus and try one of these P35 boards, but mainly for curiosity rather than need, although I'm not keen to pay out big for it so most likely I stick with the P5B-E Plus for my second build.

There is no cooling on the south bridge on the p5n-e sli but that doesnt affect its overclocking capabilities, im using one now and im on 3.15ghz on a 6320 with the stock cooler

thanks for the posts. i guess the deluxe is a much expensive variant (havent checked the price yet). A bit of a scratching of the head moment here

What about the gigabyte DS3, the one thats on OcUK for the week only offer. It has 1333mhz for future processors and its quad core compatible. How does that clock the E6300?

i used to have the motherboard u have, an auction site made me £75 from it... although i at least didn't spend the money on it in the 1st place...

You can pick up 680i boards for £120 second hand, as long as its rev2, it'll have every possible feature that you could want...

Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650

A couple of questions about this mobo. Does this have 2x16 SLi or 2x8Sli? Does it support 1333Mhz fsb?

Also, if i do buy this one (which im on the verge of, just looking around for more reviews) do i need to buy an extra heatsink for the North south bridges because i have read in the buyers review on OcUK people have replaced there southbridge heatsink in order to safely overclock their C2D. Please let me remind you once again. Im looking to clock my e6300 above 3Ghz and have it stable with my current specs.

Thanks in advance.

The gigabyte Ds3P looks an attractive option so far havent come across any negative reviews but for the P5N-E sli i have read some bad ones. Ok i can let go off sli, now, does the DS3P (FSB1333mHz) overclock well with the E6300?

I know im asking too many questions but i just dont want to screw up like last time so please bare with me and also please help
