With one thousand hectares of vineyards, and thanks to its position on the southern side of the Alps, Ticino is a special case among the winegrowing regions of Switzerland.

For more than a hundred years, Merlot has been the most widely cultivated grape variety. The resulting wines are of excellent quality, and have won prizes and plaudits at international competitions and in guidebooks. Most of the Merlot produced is red, with barrel-matured wines often attaining a high quality. The whites are also excellent – whether barrel-matured or not – as are the new sparkling wines.

In recent years, Ticino winemakers have also experimented successfully with a variety of grape blends, and the resulting wines are well worth trying. Tasting a glass of good wine direct at the cellar door or at one of the numerous winemaking festivals is a popular – yet refined – pleasure in Ticino. Local Merlot also goes particularly well with typical products from the region, such as cheese from the alpine pastures and traditional salami.

DO YOU LIKE WINE???

This belongs in the food forum. Btw, do you ever talk about anything other than Switzerland and the weather? :p

edit: I'm shocked that red wine goes with cheese ;)

Cheese and red wine is another natural match. Red wines can stand up to more pungent flavors in cheese. Stinky and richly scented cheeses are often too much for more delicate white wines. However, many richer red wines have meaty and earthy aromas of there own which can pair nicely with many types of rich cheeses. Also, their fuller body and rich structure can buffer very sharp cheeses with an intense personality. Here are some general types of red wines and the cheeses that pair well with them. As with food, try pairing wines that have similar profiles, matching richly flavored cheese and red wine that has similar, rich flavors. Also look for natural pairings from the same region, such as Italian truffle cheese (Boschetto al Tartufo) with Barolo or Barbaresco. Here are some more tips on red wine and cheese pairing.

The pictures are nice but the constant adverts for switzerland are starting to drag a bit.

I've lived in switzerland and frankly it was a bit dull! :p

(Nice scenery though)

Switzerland can have some great views if you goto the right places, its the same as anywhere.

But don't ever try to make them laugh or their face will crack xD Why dont the Swish have a sense of humor?
