I am in desperate need of getting myself a decent console for gaming. I still play a few games on my PC but due to various work / life comitments I don't have the time i used to have to be able to have those long drawn out sessions playing EVE or WOW or even back in the day DAoC.

Additionally the last console I got was a gamecube so I could do with a decent upgrade. The only problem is I am not sure what one to get. PS3, Xbox360 or Wii ?

Price is not an issue so I don't have to put that into the equation. I will be using this console on a 37 icnh HD TV if that makes any difference to the choice.

The sort of games I like playing on consoles are generally decent beat em ups like streetfighter 2, teken etc, racing games like gran turismo, NFS etc footy games and decent space based shoot-em ups (oh for the want of a modern version of r-type :P )

So based on that what platform should I go for ?

hmm, You're on the fence with those games requests.

I initially thought PS3 easy. As the games you want are on that system. But Gran Turismo isn't yet.

Where as you have the likes of Forza 2 on xbox 360 which is fantastic.

I'm still leaning towards PS3 as your best decision though, But it's not clear cut.

Either 360 or PS3 would suit your purpose by the sounds of it. Id have a look at the games out and the games announced in the genres you've mentioned and see which looks better. Both consoles have good games in those genres.

well i dont own one. then get a 360.. xbla, unlocking achievment points is fun and xbox live

that is all

XBLA has some damn good space shoot em ups as well, and some very good ones on the way. Ikaruga anyone? Not sure about PSN as I don't have a PS3 myself.

If you really want gran turismo and tekken then ps3 but you'll have to wait a bit (or you could get gt5 prologue for now). Would you want to watch blu rays?

don;t actually own any blu-ray movies yet, but I guess after the recent announcements blu-ray is going to beat HD DVD so it might be worth getting a PS3 so I have a blu-ray player reday to go when I do start buying films in that format.

Does anyone know when GT5 (full edition) is going to be released ?

I thought about the Wii for a while but that is the kind of console which onyl really shines when you have a whole bunch of you gathered around the TV playing at the same time. For general solo gaming I would have thought xbox/PS3 would probably have a list of better games ?

I would go for PS3 from what you said about Gran Turismo, Tekken etc. Plus you have the BluRay factor as well. Alright so GT5 and Tekken aren't out yet, but I take it you are buying a console now with a long term outlook regarding gaming in the future?

Depends what you're going to use it for really. Technically, the PS3 beats the 360, because of Blu-ray and the better kit you get with it. But it majors in slightly different types of games, and different franchises. I was a fan of Halo and Burnout games so i went with the 360, which for me was the right choice (don't play MGS or GT). Depends what your gaming tipple is

It's a difficult descision.

On the one side you have blu-ray and the promise of Tekken and GT sometime in the future. As a value proposition if you really want blu-ray it's a no brainer.

On the other you have the better version of Fifa 08 (also the version the OcUK league is playing), the better version of Virua Fighter 5 (the only one with online, revised AI and better AA) (also have exclusive DOA), and a ready to go racing game in Forza 2 (there's also PGR4 which is amazing and it sounds like you'd love it). There are also rumours that Tekken is coming to the 360 (possible timed exclusive). You'd also be playing all this the day you got your console (today!).

Gah.... you make a very good argument for going with a 360

if you want to wait for Tekken and GT5 (not prologue) then wait and get a PS3

if you want to play Virtua Fighter 5 and Forza 2 then get a 360.

Tell us a bit more about how you like to game.

Do you want to play online a lot with friends etc or just occasionally?
Do any of your friends have a PS3 or 360?
Is having a HD movie player important to you?
Do you have a PVR and if not do you think it's something you would consider in the future?
Is the noise of the console important?
Do you want to be able to do other things with your console other than just play games, i.e. watch DiVX, XViD movies, store photos & music etc?
How big are your hands and how do you hold a controller usually i.e. do you tend to hold it losely or do you grip it tightly?

These are all things you need to consider when chosing between the PS3 and 360 imo.

That's the big reason for getting an Xbox360.

You can do that on both though?

You can but I was thinking more about the size and ease of upgrading the PS3 hard drive. If someone was interested in watching DiVX, storing photo's and music etc then the 360's HDD can be a little limiting. Especially so if you did want to use it as a PVR.
